Emotions are on the rise… Feelings are increasing… Lust is growing…. How is this any different from paradise?
Uroshima Monogatari is essentially a wet dream framed in a single volume.
Known for his fantastical and outlandish stories, Yoji Fukuyama shows that he has certainly refined his style since his start in
...
the 70s ; his arrangement of surrealistic elements blending with reality where his characters progressively lose all grasp on their actions would probably remind you of the works of Satoshi Kon.
Don’t be mistaken by the title, this manga has almost nothing to do with the tale of Uroshima Taro but only broadly reuses its premise. The story of this nameless middle-aged man is a way to give life to some of the wild delusions of the regular guy and create a fake paradise in a strict and prudish japanese society. Who’s never dreamed of being able to have sex with anyone you just met and indulge in the pleasure of fornication right there in the street ?
Entranced and captivated by a mysterious young girl, this man will quickly become a prisoner to his pulsions. In this alternate reality, seasons change in a blink and he feels his existence vanishing a little more every time he has his way, stuck in an endless continuity of ecstasy without any real meaning. But is it better to be lost in your dreams or to have lost all your dreams ?
Under its appearance of a witty black comedy, it really is about a headlong rush into the desires, the fantasies and the sorrows of the common man, a jump into immorality and perversion.
(While Uroshima Monogatari does have explicit sex scenes as it’s the main theme of this work, its classification of Hentai on mal is erroneous as it was published in Manga Erotics, so it’s (relatively) safe to read, even if you have an aversion for the genre)
