Synopsis

The sadistic daimyo Tadanaga Tokugawa has decreed Japan's first martial arts competition with real swords, appalling even the most loyal of his retainers. However, when the spectators realize that the first match pits the one-armed Gennosuke Fujiki against the blind and lame Seigen Irako, even those with the most forceful objections declare the match to be a farce and the combatants' deformities an affront to their station.

Most of the attendees are unaware of the deep-seated hatred Gennosuke and Seigen hold for each other, which stems from their struggle to become the heir to the insane samurai Kogan Iwamoto, leader of the notorious Kogan-ryuu dojo. Their once-cordial rivalry for Kogan-ryuu and the hand of Kogan's daughter Mie quickly turns violent when one of the young warriors angers the master, causing a chain of events that eventually leads to their severe injuries.

Shigurui chronicles the decisions that led Gennosuke and Seigen to this desperate point, as well as the many lives ruined by the brutality of samurai culture.

Shigurui is a masterpiece like none other.

From the incredibly detailed anatomy of the drawings, to the accuracy of the historical setup along with the narration style, it is a perfect portrait of a incredible story.
It is nothing like any other manga you migh have encountered. It is a seinen with the most rights, no filling, no jokes or senseless storytelling. From the beginning to the end is a continuous narration of a grueling duel by two archenemies, once students of the same school.

Fujiki Gennosuke and Irako Seigen will be part of a grueling tournament in the Sunpu Castle with real blades. This would be the ...

Mixed Feelings
Starts out fairly absurd with a crazy depiction of a senile teacher, really out there characterization, and "typically shonen" battles and techniques. Near the end, though, as the extravagant elements start to fall away, the core of the story is exposed as a tragic story about obsession and obligation. It really comes into its own as it heads toward the conclusion, and it makes me wish it had calmed down a little bit to give the earlier events more weight. I think I'm probably the only person that feels that way, though.

Most of the characters aside from the two leads (including their female love interests) ...

Imma keep it a buck, narratively this feels like a rough/first draft. Dialogue and narration can be redundant and utilitarian which isn't a great mix. An example is when the narrator goes out of the way to state a character is taller than another when there's a two page spread perfectly showing that. It can be very excessive. Irako and Fujiki are compelling characters and I guarantee you'll enjoy every fight between the two which is why I think the manga isn't trash. I don't recommend the manga because those duels are few and far between and I don't find any other character compelling despite ...
