Synopsis

Some athletes dream of the bling-bling, others dream of the women. But real hoop dreams reflect the desire to be the best. The dream of being able to take the rock, drive the lane, and take it to the hole. That's Nate Torres, branded as the team benchwarmer, just trying to get that shot at high school fame and glory. When he blows his chance to try and make his high school team, he takes his dream to the only place he has left ... the streets.

Away from the spotlight and glory of organized basketball, Nate Torres discovers himself on a back alley half-court.

Harlem Beat was partially published in English by Tokyopop, who published 27 volumes from May 1, 1999 to December 4, 2007. The title was split into two separate series, with volumes 1-9 printed under the title Harlem Beat, and volumes 12-29 under the title Rebound, with volumes 10 and 11 being briefly summarized in an epilogue.

Harlem Beat is a well-rounded Manga that evenly incorporates love, friendship, slice of life, and crazy special moves. Its basketball expands from the streets to high school, and there are many shifts in the romantic relationships as well. The story told is much more mature and broad with twists and turns in contrast with Slam Dunk, which tends to linearly focus on the energy of youth on basketball courts. I usually do not examine art in Manga; however, I believe that most people will be satisfied with the drawings in Harlem Beat.
