Story - 9
Hey, what else do you want me to say? I mean, if you find yourself here, most likely, the chances are you're well aware of Dokgo and Dokgo: Rewind? Or any other work from Min/Meen (the author) depending on whichever way it's spelt.
Due to this expansive universe of bullying from high school to organised violence down to money collections being run in high schools explored in Dokgo, Tong is a spinoff that introduces another character known as Lee Jung Woo. This manhwa explores his life from high school to him being a major crime syndicate boss.
It can be said that Tong is the
...
same format as Dokgo, however, it is even way more expansive than Dokgo in every possible way. As a fan of the author of all these works, I can definitely tell you I'll take my sweet time being invested in all these interconnected series because even though Tong as a whole series can standalone separately from Dokgo, you can definitely see some side characters that appear in both series, names being thrown around in both series as well. It makes you wonder about the flow of timing of both series in the context of their shared universe.
Art - 9
The art is the same gritty, dark and colourful art from the artist of all the other Meen works. We're already used to this. Let's go. The only reason I gave this a 9 is because some chapters can get choppy.
Character - 9
Tong in its entirety is a more expansive story than Dokgo. Although, it's way more linear since the focus is more on Lee Jung Woo, then again, Dokgo was the same way until you read Dokgo: Rewind and see the backstories of Hang Hyuk, Dong-Il and Tae Jin (I'm name dropping them from memory so I may be spelling them wrong, oh well, fuck all that). However, one thing is for certain, every character that gains an extended level of focus as you finish the first part and head into the other parts of Tong, then you'd come to appreciate each of them for what they bring to the story of the main character. Trust me, as a fan of Dokgo and Kang Hyuk, Jung Woo draws you in as a man even more than Kang Hyuk.
Enjoyment - 10
Yo, I'll tell y'all right now, I enjoy this manhwa even more so than Dokgo. When I started reading Tong: Classified, that made it even more pronounced. You'll love (and enjoy) Tong for the same reasons you loved (and enjoyed) Dokgo (if you did, that is) and then some!!! The themes of the social and societal construct of the typical Korean way of life is even more discussed in the entirety of Tong (including its sequels).
Overall - 9
Read it all in one go. It's that simple.
- Jung Woo is a better fighter (in my opinion), more balanced than Kang Hyuk as an individual.
- The action aspect doesn't disappoint.
- The side characters later surrounding Jun Woo as he grows into a BOSS are legit nice to see.
- Tong as a whole is just bigger and more expansive than Dokgo.
What more do you want me to say? READ IT IF YOU LIKE DOKGO!
