THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Hm, actually I own the book but never read it so I don't really know if it follows the book to the letter. Not much is happening this first episode but maybe I have to stop comparing it to the live-action movie. I'm interested in seeing how this is gonna play out in the next episodes.

This OVA is supposed to be the most accurate to the book, which, so far it's doing a pretty good job. And it would be good to stop comparing it to the movie.

The live action movie, while well made has little relation to the book: for example the whole romance between Carmen and Johny that's one of the central themes in the movie is given exactly half a page in the book. Therefore, comparing the anime to the movie is not really doing it justice.
i'm realy interested to see how it all turns out, being a huge R.A. Heinlein fan:)

This is pretty similar to the book AND movie. I wouldn't be surprised if the people that made the movie saw the anime before hand.

The movie was fun, but it completely fails as an adaptation of the book. Kind of like Jurassic Park, but not quite as epic a failure.

In terms of this episode, all that's really missing is the social commentary (sadly, the best part). It provides many things the movie completely eliminated - most notably the suits, and gets Rico's signing up a lot closer.

I will say that the similarities to the book won't last, but an in-depth discussion is best served by a new thread.

Is it just me or does Bungie Studios need to pay these guys for copying their mobile suits in the game halo?

Probably not as there is probably more than five differences between them.

Apparently during the Vietnam war, Starship troopers was required reading for officers in the US Military.

While this is the most accurate representation of the book I've seen, it's still a bit crazy since this feels like such an amateurish anime in so many ways. The pacing of scenes, the use of the totally inappropriate music, the very strange character designs and odd choice of voices of some of the characters. Although I'm glad that they actually are using the power suits unlike in the terrible movie with excellent Miyatake designs.

The opening song for this series is solid, so 80s.

marvellously 80's. But I'm glad they're keeping true to the book so far.

The first noticeable thing is the ugly (or poor?) chara-design. It looks so cheap and simple for an 80s OAV. And I am not talking about the absence of direction.

2/5 It might pick up later when the army theme is used.

From what I've read, this series is as far away from the book as the movie (who by the way had an interesting form, like Robocop before, despite probably being a bad adaptation).

Paul Verhoeven is a Dutch director. He wanted to make an anti fascist military film. The exact OPPOSITE of what the book is about and what Americans generally believe. True story: the military is considered such a waste of money and irrelevant that there isn't even budget for ammunition during training exercises. They have to shout "pang pang". No I am not making this up. One of the wealthiest countries in he world. Glorification of military or respect for military service is unheard of.

The anime is Japanese and their outlook is, at least for the right wing nationalist part of Japanese political spectrum, much more in line with the US.

The animation is rough and the adaptation of the source material is very dull. It's more quirky than enjoyable.
