Why is Hikari so obsessed with being # 1?

Having read the whole manga, I ended up asking myself this: Why, really? I mean, I get it while they were 'rivals' but, now that they are boyfriend and girlfriend, why is hikari still so obsessed with beating Kei? She'll challenge him anywhere and anytime! The manga never explains it. If I were Kei, I'd be tired to death of it.
