I really really hope misao will not say something like: " i've decided to still have the child, because i can't abduct the child because i love it too much and i don't want it to die" or something like that. I've always hated that kind of stuff, i mean, isn't it cruel to let a baby live without it's mother. i know it's hard and stuff, but it isn't something positive to give birth to a child, knowing you won't be there for it...

Well, since we ALL know how Misao is, she will most likely to give birth to the baby. And since the mangaka likes to surprise people with her plot twists (so many fcking plot twists), she will most likely survive. Somehow. Lol.

And cruel to live without its mother? That would depend on how the individual was brought up; but I have a friend who was in a situation like that. Her mom was pregnant with her and had breast cancer at the same time. She only had enough money to either give birth or to get an operation and save herself. She chose to give birth. My friend is 20 yo now and she is forever thankful for the life her mom she has. She doesn't really know what it's like to have a mom, but that doesn't deter her from enjoying life to the fullest.

I pretty much expected this announcement with all of the foreshadowing and such so I agree with your plot prediction. Call me a sadist but I'd probably be happier with this story if Misao died though. A beautiful tragedy? Is there such a thing?

I agree with your assessment of the situation having more to do with upbringing as well since I don't think that the choice to carry the child has as much to do with Misao's character in and of itself so much as the culture in which the mangaka (and hence Misao) lives. I think that for many people, the choice to carry to term a child that one has lovingly conceived is an easy one as there is the cultural expectation that a "good" mother is supposed to lay down her life for that of her child. Thus, abortion is a hard choice for most people, even when faced with their own death, especially when a child is desired, especially if they have no other children.

In Misao's situation, it is easy to rationalize that life of the child with at least one parent (and an entire clan that will care for it) outweighs the needs & desires of the adults in this case. Sometimes, people will even attempt to fool themselves into thinking that they'll beat the odds and, no matter what, survive to care for their child. In addition, no matter how much we love our parents, are we willing to tell orphans that their lives are no longer worth living because they don't have them? Isn't that kind of harsh?
