Coach is so badass he goes on a light-speed space mission wearing his sunglasses.

And awesome design that Exelion has. Not only it kinda looks like a Star Wars' Star Destroyer, but they made it with an excellent view into the girls' bathroom.

One thing I don't get is the it's been one hour to us but 6 months to you because we've been travelling at light speed business. What the hell? Travelling faster doesn't alter time for the whole universe, only yourself. That theory is beyond logic. If it actually existed it could be used as a way to time travel. Considering it was an hour to them but six months to earth, that means if they were travelling around like that in space for one year, it would be sixty years to earth but still only one year to them.

People could just be like "oh, I can't be bothered to wait three months for the next volume of Bleach, lets travel at light speed in space for a few seconds to get it!"

It makes no sense I tell ya! Unless I'm missing something extremely important... but I don't think I am!

The idea is that for whatever body is experiencing the near lightspeed travel, the time for that body is going to be experienced much more slowly than time for an outside observer not traveling near the speed of light.

It may not make sense to you, but the phenomenon is scientifically sound. It's called time dilation.

I'm enjoying this series, and it's not because of the boobs.

Yeah the commander is badass, he'll never take his sunglasses, not even in space, nor in the place where light can never reach. That's how badass he is.

I think Einstein's theory of relativity also comes in to affect this time/light-speed travel business.

Also, the same man has theorized that, if you go over the speed of light, you will travel back in time.

So maybe, going nearer and nearer the speed of light makes time go slower and slower, until it actually starts to reverse?

I tell ya, space and time science is much more complicated than one even imagines.
The fact that all of this stuff seems like something out of a manga that is nowhere near what real world events resemble makes it even harder to grasp.

Cheers for that, it was quite an interesting read. I actually watched a documentary that talked a little about time dilation some months after I saw Gunbuster and feel pretty stupid for saying that now, haha. You'll have to excuse my stupidity!

At first sight of Exelion it immediately reminded me of Star Destroyers too! The main display is so far Ohta had to use binoculars to see the display readouts, and that same readout which can be replicated at the display console in front of him, as the Captain showed him several seconds later. >_<

That was pretty hot with the nudity ;) Tastefully done though, especially compared to how they do it these days. I liked the episode and the anime's turning out better after the first one. That commie girl was definately a fast-acting tsundere ... most of her type take awhile after getting beaten before they show their deredere side. Ah well, fewer bitchy characters in an anime is a good thing.

What I don't understand is how her father managed to get back for her birthdays. If we go by the theory of time dilation one year for him in space was a very small amount of time if he traveled near the speed of light for a number of hours. Maybe he was stationed near-Earth? But getting back for her eight birthday would've still been impossible since as shown in this ep his ship travelling at lightspeed has just gotten back in the solar system. I thought if you used lighspeed travel you "skipped time" meaning your relatives on Earth outage you very quickly (quickly from your point of view/sense of time).

Nice fight between Jung and Onee-sama, but I expected more of a rivalry she probably just wanted to test her skills.

Well I guess there isn't a body to recover since the main bridge got blasted poor Noriko-chan.

Anyone else feel like the first scene with the shuttle heading into Silver Star was an homage to 2001 A Space Odyssey Anno has said it was a big inspiration ,and the camera angles of the shuttle, the dialogue over the loudspeaker, and the entire design of Silver Star seem to directly reference the docking scene from 2001. The starship designs from the opening scene are also reminiscent of Yamato, another influence on Anno. Exelion, as has been mentioned definitely looks like a Star Destroyer as well. Finally, the next episode preview started with "The Sea of Space is my Sea!" which is a line from the opening to Space Pirate Captain Harlock, a classic anime from the 70's which coincidentally (or not) also is a creation of Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of Yamato. Even as far back as Gunbuster it seems Gainax was laying it heavy with the references!

I like Noriko a lot, but I feel like the other characters (minus badass Coach) are a little weak atm. While Jung has an awesome name, the whole rivalry with Amano at the start felt very petty & out of nowhere. (but that sort of established her character, at least I thought) Then her heel-face turn into a "buddy-buddy" sort of character felt even more out of left field. Honestly, I felt (to some degree still feel) that her "nice" act was just that, a front, and that she was still bitter. But idk, Anno has shown to have a great grasp of psychology in his later shows, so maybe something will come of it.

I also really like the whole atmosphere and design of the show so far. The transition from school setting to sci-fi setting in a matter of two episodes also worked surprisingly well. The fanservice doesn't make me cringe (idk why lol usually I despise fanservice, but there's something about how unassuming, un-forced, and plain hot about how it was done here that I'm fine with it. It wasn't shoe-horned in) (although I must say at some point the dialogue in the bath scene became a bit more unimportant likely so we could all focus on the "important" part lol) and was executed in good taste no problem here lol.

I could've done without the bare breasts, as it's making me hate this OVA even more.

I'm not sure if I want to continue watching the rest of it.

Edit: I've decided to drop Gunbuster. There's simply nothing likeable about this OVA.

Edit 2: I'm going to give this another chance, and attempt to finish this OVA.

I think this episode is my least favorite in the whole OVA. The previous episode felt like a whole lot of set up and balls being put in motion but this one isn't much better and also suffered from feeling less fresh than the first one. Which is too bad I feel that way because truthfully a lot of cool stuff happens, and a lot is revealed about this OVA's plans and ambitions. For starters with the whole wormhole plot we see that for all the cutesy character designs and bouncing breasts Gunbuster does aspire for hard sci-fi. And it's somewhat successful I thought the plotline was very clever, and explained the whole wormholes and relativity thing pretty well. I'm curious to see if the series can maintain this veneer or will just devolve into sporadically explained silliness.

Another thing I liked about this episode was how, even more so than the previous you can see this series as proto-Eva. The emphasis on Noriko's dead Dad and the legacy he left her, was to me somewhat reminiscent of Shinji's motherless situation especially the expectation to do great things almost to avenge them. There's also the introduction of Jung a Soviet mech pilot, who can't help but feel like a predecessor to Asuka with her red robot and Eastern European descent.

I think Jung is a welcome introduction, we need more characters than just Coach and the two girls but she's also one of my biggest issues with the episode. Her competition with Amano over Coach just felt really hollow to me basically. It was reminiscent of a lot of the soapier, melodramatic, romance plot lines in EVA which were frequently my least favorite part of that too. That and the blatant full frontal nudity of the bath scene. I don't know maybe I'm being unnecessarily squeamish. I've seen plenty of series that have done way worse scenes with bare breasts just without the nipples. But something about that whole scene felt kind of ugly to me. Up to and including the kind of weakly delivered punch line of a group of mech bros marching by and catching a view.

All in all that this is the weakest episode of Gunbuster in my opinion reflects highly on the series. There's a lot of inspired space related stuff in here, including the hair raisingly tense scene on Noriko's dad's old ship, the cadets fascinatingly depicted training exercise and just how they chose to animate all of the scenes out in space with their lower budget. It may falter a little but it keeps the series and my enthusiasm for it going so I still await the next episode with some excitement.

Oota said that each minute should be like 3 months on Earth. The whole mission lasted 10 minutes (maybe a bit more, according to Amano's clock), so 30 months should have passed upon Noriko's return to the space station. But as we see, only 6 months passed. Looks like a plothole (or a miscalculation) to me, but overall I liked the episode, onto the next one!
