Furigana (振り仮名, Furigana) are a Japanese reading aid. They consist of smaller kana (Hiragana or Katakana) printed next to a kanji or other character to indicate its pronunciation. It can be very useful for learners of Japanese because if a Kanji character is not known it can be read by the simpler kana characters.



Hiragana and Katakana are important to learn if you plan to continue to learn Japanese. A chart is listed below.
