The announcement of the new squeal has surprised me, and most likely a lot of others too. Mostly because of the large gap between the seasons.

SO, has there ever been a series that had a 4 year gap between the seasons?

There was Shakugan no Shana S(OVA series) during that four year gap.

Well, the main reson for the gap is that the light novels were really far from finishing back then, that's why they had to wait, and I believe it's quite common if they make anime when the original work is far from finishing yet.
