THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The third quarter, like the last half of the second quarter, consisted mostly of slow-paced set-up for the grand finale. The Cosette x Marius lovey-doveyness wasn't quite as annoying as before, but it took awhile for them to actually talk to each other... and then nothing really happened apart from them talking. Then, out of nowhere, Valjean went "We're off to England. You have no say, woman!" and that was that - separation drama, caused by a complete lack of father-daughter communication.

My main irritation with the series as its progressed is the lengths the author went to in order to connect the dots. Marius attended ABC revolution meetings from time to time, even though nothing of note was ever said or done, and this only occurred so he'd be linked into the revolution craziness, towards the end. And Gavroche wasn't needed, once Cosette had been rescued, yet he keeps on reappearing simply to emphasise the suffering of the poor/children during the period.

One of the more exciting parts of the story was included in the 27-39 stretch, when Valjean was captured by Thenardier, but even that paled in comparison to the excitement back when Javert was right on Valjean's tail like a bloodhound; forcing him to hide in a convent.

Ever since Cosette left the convent and Marius entered the picture, I haven't been able to shake the feeling that I've been watching the same events occur over and over, with little to no progression. That's starting to change, now that the revolt has FINALLY started, but that doesn't change the fact that the story grinded to halt, during its middle section.

As far as charactetisation goes, I'd say Eponine is one of the few high-points from the middle of the series. At first she was very bitchy, but once she was forced to endure the hardships of poverty, it was difficult not to sympathise with her. Like she told Cosette in episode 38, even though her mother was always so near, and she had pretty dresses, she never received what she truly desired: love. And she's always come second to Cosette when it comes to boys; whether rich or poor.

Since Cosette is no longer abused, she's become a Mary Sue character with no distinictive characteristics. Even the once almighty Valjean has started to lose some points because of his paranoia... although, in fairness, it's more Cosette's fault for not telling him about her nightly vistor than it is his fault for fearing the worst and reacting.

In spite of my negativity, Les Mis is set-up for an epic finish. However, what I've read about the people not dying like in the novel and blood not being shown make me a little fearful. Forced happiness is never a going thing.

The flames of revolution have at long last ignited. It's getting depressing to watch everyone in constant misery and turmoil. Looking forward to the conclusion this leads to, as I'm not one bit familiar with the novel.

The revolution is finally starting. Gotta say that the build was worth it, definitely excited for what's to come.
