Do I need to play the games to watch this?

I just watched the first episode, and uh... Yeah, I'm a little lost. The show was jumping all over the place.

I understand that it's based on the games, which I've known about for a while, but do I really need to play them to understand everything? I mean, they're pretty rare nowadays I'd imagine, and from what I can see on amazon they'd take a chuck out of my wallet if I wanted 'em all. Too bad since I'd be interested in playing them otherwise.

I don't think they are based on games, they simply are 2 different parts of the same story. I just watched it and never played any of the videogames and i''m about to watch the other .hack series as well. Well you probably won't see my reply (kinda late :p) but if anyone is wondering about that that's my opinion.

I don't think you do, I watched the series without ever trying the game and I enjoyed it :)
