It's basically the same, except they basically commit xenocide first THEN change their ways.
But it's basically the same.

The difference is that the Formics were operating on the original supposition that humans weren't sentient (and therefore it did not matter that they were trying to colonize our planet), but later learned that we were and decided to leave us alone. However, we had no way of knowing this, so we went out and wiped them out anyway.

I don't see evidence that this is the case with ELS in this movie -- they're just looking for ways to keep their species alive, sentience of other races be damned (or even a bonus!) -- but I can definitely see the (tenuous) connection you're trying to make.
