So, this is why they told me to watch Tokyo Babylon before X.
Subaru sure has grown a lot.

This show's approach to storytelling can get quite frustrating at times, doesn't help that I had this on hold for a while.
And that battle between the two just ended in a weird way. Well, it didn't really end they just stopped for some reason even though they're apparently mortal enemies.

Saw Tokyo Babylon so long ago, don't remember anything about Hokuto dying in it.

With the excess of people standing around talking in this series I rather liked an episode that was quieter. The supernatural also seems ominous and mysterious for once instead of just superpowers.

Subaru, my precious boy! It's so good to see you again.
Such a great episode, Subaru's story is heartbreaking.

At 1st, I thought this streak of character-centric episodes was rather uninteresting. It's actually made well enough and is logical for a 24eps series. It couldn't allow the focusless meandering of the manga series since an animated show has a predetermined format.
The Satsuki intro was okay (although rather bland), Subaru's get a better episode thanks to a dedicated atmosphere. The necessary references to Tôkyô Babylon don't make the whole episode suffocate like one could fear, a pretty good choice.

4/5

Obviouly, the OAVs were like every OAV based on a manga series: a snippet of what the comics had to offer.

This is why they told me to watch Tokyo Babylon before X.

I really don't see what watching the OAVs gives as an advantage over what we get presented here. The manga, sure.

I liked the music that played in this episode to create the spooky atmosphere when Subaru was walking around. But some of the stuff he was doing, whether it was direction of the show or just his actions seemed confusing. I'm not entirely sure what the outcome of that "fated" battle was, and then it just jumped into him dispelling an illusion of a dead lover? Weird.

"...Is your mother worried? Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?"

For anyone confused about Subaru's actions towards the end of the episode, he's a "medium" for hire (Tokyo Babylon is a two episode peek into him when he was younger doing that, worth the watch, 2nd episode was much stronger imo. The manga will ofc be more expansive, I gotta read it sometime :p) Also if you haven't watched it, it's not necessary for this, it's like a Subaru 2 episode "side stories" thing. So he was actually on the job working for that lady when Sorata and Arashi encountered him.

As for his fated/eternal battle with the other individual. It's my understanding that their history is more fleshed out in the manga as well (I gotta pick that up, same with this show tbh).

Really enjoying my time with X so far. Liking these characher "who are they" episodes as well.

and subaru's theme rocks

its somewhere out of a paranormal fight.

good introduction to subaru

Without change,we end up becoming the very person we hate.

I was dead until the moment I met you. I was a powerless corpse pretending to be alive. Living without power, without the ability to change my course, was bound to lead me to a slow death.
