We start with Melina, who is dying. Her father stores her memories in a machine and attempts to imprint them into other girls. Note the language here; "store her memories". Linguistically, it's not dealing with metaphysics, with souls, but with a materialistic view of being; a person is the sum of the contents of their brains.

Whistler’s machine must be capable of implanting Melina’s memories into other people multiple times; if it could do it only once, as if it were operating under a concept of transference of a soul, then the machine would not have worked after Melina's memories were downloaded into Jenis. It would therefore have been unnecessary for Melina/Jenis to steal the key to the machine to prevent Whistler from using it on Emily.

For proof we have Nina, in whom an imperfect and decaying copy was created before the successful imprint into Jenis. The copy isn’t complete, but it’s enough for the brain in Nina’s body to belief itself to be Melina for a time.

The implications of all this are that people, in this one case particular person, can be fabricated and that true individuality does not exist.

A possible problem with this in the conclusion of the memory-imprint plot where the copy of Melina relinquishes Jenis' body back to the original persona. This seems more like it's dealing with an idea of a soul. How could imprinted memories be capable of choosing to leave a body?

This can be reconciled if you account for how difficult it was to imprint the memories in the first place; Whistler tried at least three girl before Jenis, none with complete success. The complete download into Jenis is portrayed as possible only because Jenis herself permitted it. Perhaps we could say that the copy of Melina in Jenis willed itself into permanent dormancy (a kind of death) in order to return the original persona to control of the body rather than "leaving". Is this plausible?

Incidentally, the copy of Melina in Jenis recalls dying, so Whistler's machine must have been able to record Melina's memories after her death. I wonder how that worked.
