and reasons for suggesting it.

I suggest "A Handmaids Tale" by Margaret Atwood.

Throughly loved this book, the plot is intense and laden with things that were. The future,and the present, is a bleak place for the main character in this story, indeed for all women. It is a glimpse into a future that does not seem so unbelievable and is definitely worth reading.
