The entire animation is being done by Chinese studios. Aniplex is just a producer

I saw mappa and silver link in the end credit. but their credit was in Chinese so I'm not sure what they did.

That's Outsourcing. Many elements in animation are outsourced to other animation studios even though the most of it is done by the in-house studio itself. There can be some assets which was provided by outsourced studios. You can find studios who are not the main studio listed in credits in most shows, both live Action and animation (in most countries)

Hopefully it means China will start to ditch the ugly 3DCG and replace it with this much nicer style

right, I'm aware of outsourcing. every studio does that.

but if part of the animation is outsourced to mappa, you can't really claim the animation is 100% Chinese. I guess same argument can be made about anime because I always see Viet/Chinese names on the credits so anime is not 100% Japanese as well.

yeah I'm really digging the hybrid style. the 3D in this show is tastefully done.

@sicklyslick You are correct that this isn't 100% made Chinese. I just think it is funny that for the longest time anime fans acted like anime was 100% Japanese made and ignored the fact that Korea, China and South East Asia did a lot of outsourced work. Now it is the opposite and minor scenes for this show are getting outsourced to Japan.

Can’t speak too soon, this is only the first episode plus it’s competing with Lazarus and moonrise in this season alone

The start? Most stuff is out sourced to China already. Your favorite animes are likely made by a lot of Chinese animators.

This isn't the start at all.

@deg so FYI, the Japanese government actually is promoting more co-productions between Chinese and Japanese studios. The reason being is that Nezha 2 broke box office records in China alone and Japan wants in on that market.

For To Be Hero X, it is being shown on Fuji TV (which is currently sinking right now) and Fuji TV even has a special timeslot for Bilibili shows. In return, Bilibili will get to show more Japanese animations in China.

Lastly, Sony is the owner of Aniplex and Crunchyroll and has a very small stake in Bilibili. Which is why Aniplex is the co-producer for To Be Hero and Crunchyroll has the distribution rights to To Be Hero X outside of Asia. Because of this business relationship, this explains why the only donghuas to find on Crunchyroll are ones produced by Bilibili.
