The man and woman who adopt Momo are always called "mama" and "papa," with very little mention of their real names. I know that in Japan, it is normal for parents to use such titles as "the dad" and "the mom" of a household. Perhaps it's because Japanese isn't my native language, but Minky Momo's use of these terms strikes me as oddly exaggerated. In the 1st episode of the 90s series, for example, they call each other papa and mama before even meeting Momo! Why would they do that when they have no kids, except as a deliberate decision on the writer's part? I feel this fits the whimsical nature of the show. In translating everything to sound as normal as possible, the English subs lose this nuance.

Some father & mother without children tend to say that, it seems to me a (very simple and rudimentary) means of programming the child
