For anyone who is a huge fan of this anime, you might also like an older anime from the 90's called Blue Seed. It's one of the first anime I've seen when first being aware of what anime was back in the late 90's.

  • The main male and female leads are similar in personality
  • The main male leads look similar with their hairstyle and face
  • The main male leads are always teasing the female lead
  • The two characters have to physically get closer to become more powerful. The dynamic is similar in that the girl isn't a fighter, while the guy is, but he becomes more powerful when he uses her seemingly low level power.
  • The main villains are similar (I can't go into too much detail without spoiling Blue Seed)
  • The group of side characters are not similar, but the whole group/taskforce going out and fighting monsters is
  • The male leads usually end up shirtless
  • The female leads have quirky "rivals" with dual personalities...sort of?

The entire time I watched Undead Unluck, I couldn't help but think of Blue Seed. Some of the similarities are probably tropes you find in a lot of anime, but it's the combination of them as well as the overall vibe. Both shows lean in to the comedy while still having serious and dramatic moments. There are a ton of differences of course. The lore of the monsters, the world, the overall cast, the story are completely different. However, I think if you watched even the first 3 to 5 episodes, you'd see how the two lead characters and the way they fight/fly around, it'd be impossible to say there wasn't at least some inspiration. Or maybe it could be a case where both anime were inspired by the same thing.

Either way, if you like Undead Unluck, I think you'll find Blue Seed enjoyable (especially if you're into 90's anime and that whole aesthetic). Not the second season though. I've been a fan since I was a kid though, so it could be nostalgia talking. It's not an anime I ever see brought up in any discussion unless I bring it up, lol.

Blue Seed is a drama though, not a comedy like Undead Unluck, so I'm probably not interested.

@Zarutaku i've seen it at least 10 times all the way through, I'd say it's 80% comedy and 20% drama (maybe even a 90/10 split... I wouldn't even call it a drama honestly. It'd be like calling Undead Unluck a drama because of the serious or tragic moments it has. Undead Unluck has more serious moments/drama the more I think about it. more character deaths and tragic back stories. There's really only one sort of tragic character in the show that's technically a side character. but i can't go into it without major plot spoilers.

I'll say you're more likely to cry watching Undead Unluck than Blue Seed.
