That's my favorite episode of the whole series so far! It challenged everything I thought I knew about this anime!
First things first I was very wrong last episode.
I still believe His ability is impersonating anyone (maybe also gaining their ability), but it's certain now that He didn't impersonate Akitsu.
I assumed he would not be able to move his body to the future, only his consciousness, so he wouldn't have free will there.
Now it seems like he can move any object (including himself) to the future and after it's been there for some time he has to move it back.
If he was not required to move it back he would not be worried about dying when he learned that he was killed by Gorō.
I suspect he was moving himself to the future of the current timeline and if he didn't like it he moved back and changed the timeline.
His ability is for sure able to create new timelines (he said himself that's what he did) but I my guess is that they have to be consistent.
This means that in each timeline the objects Akitsu moved have always traveled to the future, possibly been affected in some way and returned.
For example, if he decided to move Gorō's father, from before he was born, so that he would not get married, Gorō would never exist.
Consequently, if Gorō doesn't exist, maybe Lall is born and she becomes the MC (but this time without trying to resurrect him).
In any case I think Akitsu would still need to move Gorō's father, for whatever reason, so that the timeline is consistent.
Gorō's ability is similar, in the sense that he also creates a consistent timeline, but he does it by preventing an object from existing directly.
But I would say that Gorō's ability is actually closest to Ryō's.
In fact, my new theory about this show is that abilities always have a compliment.
- Ryō creates universes / timelines while Gorō destroys them
- Akitsu moves objects through time while Mitsuko moves objects through space
- Ama levels the playing field by preventing the use of abilities while Lall does so by stealing abilities
- Chika destroys objects by burning them while Honoka creates them from flesh and most importantly
- He manipulates the appearance while Tatsuya manipulates the mind
I say "most importantly" because this also leads to a prediction I have for the near future of this anime (maybe even next episode).
What if Akitsu moves Tatsuya forward in time so that he and He can recreate Gorō? ("he and He" sounds so weird...)
This could be the end game of the show, by combining complimentary abilities greater thinks than the sum of their parts can be created.
To end this long comment, which I started writing about 7 hours ago (I have not been writing for 7 hours straight), I have some miscellaneous remarks.
- The slow corruption of God is really intriguing, but I don't have much to say as I don't know where it could lead
- The president (Death Spreader) to me has always looked like an older version of Gorō. I don't think it's significant, but you never know
- I'm not sure what Eko's role is in the story. Currently she (/he it's not very clear) is a bit annoying.
- Ama vs Mitsuko was incredible! Great performance from both VAs! I know Fairouz Ai very well, but I have not heard much from Kajiwara Gakuto.
- "We didn't become abnormal beings who don't age. Most likely, what your brother did that day detached us from this world, which was abnormal to begin with." - He. This is too vague for even me to have a theory about it. Can't wait to see what next has in store for us!
I think it's pretty obvious now why this is my favorite episode so far (if the length of the comment wasn't enough for you). |
