Been thinking about this a lot lately, so I'll just use this post to vent my mind out. I do genuinely believe Oreimo implicated the Otaku culture perfectly, and there's a reason why I think it still holds up.

The things they explore honestly amaze me: doing irl online meet-ups, going to Comiket, and even having a whole episode dedicated to an anime being adapted and how Kirino was pessimistic with the way they handled it. The one scene that really stuck with me was when Kirino's friend, Ayase, dropped Kirino for her weird otaku, sister fetish hobby, and claimed being into those does more damage to people than good; they later befriended each other again, but Ayase was still a bit iffy about the Weeb culture.

I'm uprightly surprised that no other anime has done a greater deep dive into the otaku culture than Oreimo. I guess you could argue My Dress-up Darling came the closest, but even then, it's nothing to compare with Oreimo.

I guess that's what makes Oreimo special to me, with how they handle the culture that is still quite accurate to this day.

What do you guys think tho?

What I hated most is how awful the MC sister was to her MC brother, then they have that same brother claiming to be in love with the sister.

🤦🏻‍♂️ It didn’t make any sense at all.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I agree it’s a very good take on Otaku culture, but people forget this aspect of the show for another aspect.

There's another anime called Genshiken that perhaps has done an even deeper dive into the otaku culture.

It's crazy to see this post after I just finished my third watch through over the past ten years this morning. This show really does hit hard over the otaku culture at its time (2010 and prior). I remember when it was so hard to let anyone know you were into anime. Now it seems to be the cool kid thing. I feel old saying that. Then again I am getting old 😅.

I think back then, it was bad to be into anime cause it was a stigma of nsfw stuff, cringy girls, etc but like not all anime is like that. Now, apparently everyone watches it and is “hip”. I remember not telling anyone because I would be made fun of lol.

Different people have different passions/hobbies, that’s basically it in today’s generation. As long as it isn’t “too bad”, I think it’s socially acceptable yk
