could you tell at what exact time did they got stuck in the loop, was it before the explosion or after the explosion. if it's before then why is the explosion again and again mentioned in the movie and if it's after then masaume's father shouldn't be alive and if he's not alive how did he write in his diary ?
the most confusing part for me in the movie is the diary part where the father's diary was revealed to masamune
| @chee_tah If you don't want to dig too deep and discuss complicated things at length, just take the film as a metaphor for accepting traumatic memories and living in the past is detrimental to your life. This is a recurring motif in Mari Okada's fiction. |

| @chee_tah Right. As far as I could tell. The factory exploded and roughly at the same time Itsumi crossed over on the train to the parallel world where the story takes place. In this parallel world the workers survived the explosion (or it never actually happened). Masamune father is therefore still alive, but he knew that the parallel wasn't real and as he watched his son get better at drawing it made him sad that it would never amount to anything. He got so sad he cracked and got taken away by the smoke monsters. |
