[SPOILER ALERT] hehe

In the manga, wys or wis or whatsoever is that skill called, in the manga it will be later known as "Courage" where his sword can absorb a magic that was thrown to it and use its element like its his own. Wis/Wys is a skill when he use the element he absorbed to attack from his sword. However, it seems like there are some more explanations about his skill from the past thats concerning Mercedes, the creator of the tower, but that matter is not yet explain much even in the manga.

Ok, only spoiler about the thing you ask.

[Spoiler alert]

As you see, Rosti throw ice shard to remind Will about "Wand and Sword", something he forgot. There's flashbacks and all.

Now the real big spoilers, this isn't the first time Will use [ Wis ]. However, due to him screw himself up so bad and lost memory about the past events when he used Wis, people around Will (especially Elfaria) afraid he gonna screw himself up again so they keep this secret from Will until they are certain that he's ready to use his own power. Now, with emergency accident happen and Will is ready, here Rosti come to jog his memory.

Lastly, if you wonder why Rosti remind Will with ice shard....[more Spoiler]....the first Wis that Will use is ice element Wis he made with Elfaria's magic.

Umm...are we supposed to just forget that Will and Colette have been doing this on the regular? in the tournament, Colette summons Will a magic gauntlet which allows him to do magic damage to golems which previously were immune to his physical damage (plus giant area of effect damage) and lets him cast at least limited earth spells by punching the ground. She also regularly summons more powerful than normal swords for him, as she did in this very episode so he could cut off the wing. This is apparently so normal for them that Will doesn't even have to explain, he just says "Colette!" and she automatically knows what to do. WillXColette, obviously.

The idea of empowering Will with magic to create a situation where super strength+magic is stronger than the sum of its parts is not new. How is a flaming sword which gives him a stronger magic attack meaningfully different than an earth gauntlet which gives him a stronger magic attack? Just because they didn't call it "wand plus sword" previously?

More details behind this are revealed later on but we'd need at least another season to get there. As it's going right now season 1 won't even reach graduation.

@amf85 I think in that case Colette straight up just made him a sword and gauntlet and they were just solid objects made of earth. The 'Wis' as they called it was the sword absorbing the magic and becoming a magic sword so this is magic + strength whereas the first situation was just rock shaped as sword

@BananaBenIbby

I did go back and check the gauntlet scene before writing my comment. In Episode 5, the gauntlet lets him deal damage (a LOT of damage) against the golems. Colette then says "even if he can't use magic, if he attacks with a magical gauntlet, we're not breaking the rules," definitely implying (to me) that the gauntlet is intended to add magic damage to his attacks to give him the magic damage he lacks, even if I suppose they don't come right out and say it. In the next scene, he punches the ground and creates a large earth shield which appears to rise from the ground without a corresponding shaped/sized crater.

@amf85 im pretty sure thats his natural strength isnt it? though the shield wall was a little too perfect thats true, the crater thing was probably cos they didnt animate it. but you could be right

@BananaBenIbby I mean, I'm just interpreting the information available, they don't come out and make it clear, so I could be wrong. That's (the glove adding some amount of magic damage/utility) my read on it, however.

He can do this, because he was shot with magic spells by Colette and somehow, his sword was imbued with them.

Apart from this, I have one question: How can Julius Reinberg use Ice Magic of Elfaria?

@Fantom_Slayer i haven’t read the manga, it’s just speculation, but I think Rosti is the hooded figure talking to the lady holding baby-Will, and I think he is the fifth light attribute Magia Vander that they said was on a mission (ie. observe or protect Will?)
