How faithful to the novel?

I’ve seen it be called a niche show or a show about nothing, which I can understand, but I hope it delves more into some deeper themes and character motivations, which it seems like it’s alluding to. Also curious why it’s only a 10 episode series. I’ve seen 12, 13, or 11 episode seasons but 10 is kind of an awkward number, and makes me think it’s only a 1 season type deal.
