I was right to assume that this chapter would be a continuation of the Mikura plotline. It's been 17 chapters since we've last seen her and I can't wait to find out more about her story and how she ended up meeting Maru. This was also the first chapter since chapter 46 where Kiruko and Maru don't make an appearance although we do see them on the cover reading back to back which is pretty cute.

We also learn about Sakuya's ability which is pretty interesting − she seems to be able to see through walls which is a really good matchup with Mako's ability to erase walls (or anything else for that matter). We learn that Mikura has an ability too which I honestly didn't expect but I guess the ability stems from the Hiruko core and not the brain so Mikura can use it as well. I don't quite understand what it is tho, I guess she can inflate things she touches and then probably pop them too which is not that different from Mako's ability.

Looks like the theory of Taka being the bird hiruko is debunked. Turns out it was Sakuya. Now the question remains what, if anything, happened to Taka's core.

Why is it getting light-hearted at this point. I want it to get super serious.
That aside, the "Omae wa mou shindeiru" reference was awesome. I loved it.

@Tsarko That's a theory? I thought it was confirmed. Wait, how is it Sakuya? Sakuya can see through things and the bird hiruko had a sharp string thing.

@AlAshrafi Yeah, that was a theory based on the fact that the bird hiruko had a similar ability as Taka and also that Taka means hawk. Here are the reasons we think Sakuya is the bird hiruko:

1. Hiruko marking

The biggest reason why we think Sakuya is the bird hiruko is that she has the same marking as it.

This definitely has significance because both Ohma and Mako have the same markings in the human and man-eater forms.

2. The shape of Sakuya's ability

Credit to this picture goes to an anon from /a/ and it really gets the point across − when Sakuya uses her ability, a bird-like figure appears above her that looks remarkably similar to the bird hiruko.

3. Panel from chapter 57

In chapter 57 there is a panel that shows a few kids from the facility and for most of them we've seen their man-eater forms.

Anzu − Anjulous

Mako − the squid hiruko

Ohma − the illusion hiruko

Nanaki − the spider hiruko

Kuku − the fish hiruko

The only ones whose man-eater forms aren't confirmed are Sakuya and Kona. And there are two man-eaters who we aren't sure who they originated from: the bird hiruko and the tardigrade hiruko. This serves as another indicator that Sakuya is indeed the bird hiruko (notice that Taka isn't here) and also that Kona is the tardigrade hiruko. And yes, there is also the fungi hiruko that we also don't know who it originates from but the fungi shows up after chapter 57.

Counter-argument: Sakuya's ability

One thing that doesn't add up is Sakuya's ability − it's a seeing through walls ability unlike the bird hiruko whose ability was slashing attacks just like Taka. On the other hand, both Mako and Ohma kept the same abilities they had in human form when they became man-eaters.

One theory that I saw in the discussion thread on /a/ is that, at the time when Taka died, Sakuya already became a man-eater and she came across Taka's dead body, ate it along with its core, and thus gained his ability of slashing attacks. It's far-fetched but it's the only theory I found that could explain the incongruity in the abilities. Others point to the fact that Kuku had the ability of shooting water in her man-eater form which she didn't in her human form so it's possible that hirukos can gain new abilities when they become man-eaters.

@3UGL3N4 Whoa, well now I'm onboard with you Sakuya is the bird Hiruko theory. Thanks for that.

In the first panel, you can see this manga was featured in MyAnimeList's You Should Read This Manga event. I didn't know MyAnimeList was popular among the mangaka!
