I haven't seen the episode yet, but if this is about the "death" of a certain character I understand you, if I'm honest the first season seemed so similar to the game that I got bored, this second part is being better by telling different perspectives on Same story, it's sad, isn't it? but it is those types of feelings that the game uses as catharsis for its last part (ending E) and knowing Taro, I am very sure that he will surprise us again

Complete opposite here. The upcoming sequence is what opened my eyes to how in depth storytelling can get for a game and completely changed how I look at gaming as a whole. I’m looking forward to rewatching ALL of it. Not a fan of how fast paced it’s been but it’s not too big of a deal.

I thought humanity was wiped out by disease, but it still makes no sense why YorHa are still fighting…? They should be on the same side as the machine life forms now, as they have no humans to defend. Just let the aliens that made the machines have the planet already, it’s vacant anyway.

The surviving number of humans who took refuge on the moon to organize a counterattack using <android> soldiers to recapture Earth. However, the war reaches a stalemate as the <Machine Lifeforms> continue to multiply infinitely. In turn, humanity deploys a new unit of android soldiers as an ultimate weapon: YoRHa. Through programming - humans were their gods. After the extinction of humans, logical reasoning and eventually realised self-preservation would have led to some/many androids establishing a false truth that humans still exist,They fight because there is nothing to fight for. As automata starts we hear 2B point blank say they’re in this continuous cycle of life and death, and the only way to free themselves is to kill god. What they don’t know is that the machines had already achieved this and were only acting in self preservation/revenge towards the androids,
For the androids (and I guess pods too) to be free was the collapse of YorHa and the inability to pretend their gods were alive and to move into the uncertain future,best part of the game is knowing all this and being able to complete 20 endings.

machine network’s plan: in the Jackass field report she says how the machines were always doomed because of their primary purpose “destroy the enemy” if they do end up winning then they’ll also lose because they’ll have no enemies which would slowly cause them to go extinct since they wouldn’t be able to fulfill their one purpose, so they tried to get around this issue by coping/learning about humanity however with how complex humanity is and the lack of knowledge left, they create smaller networks to explore different facets of human society/culture/religion/government/philosophy because we had those humanized machines in part 1,as for the alien I won't give details because of spoilers

Nice info dump, I retained about 2% of that from the first season 😂 But I’m sure the last episode said disease killed humanity. Hardly matters either way, and I get the situation with the continued fighting even tho it’s for nothing, but it really doesn’t make sense for androids to have such human logic. All part of the increasing depth of feelings building up in this current season, it’s getting intense and WAY better than the first. But again, from my anime only viewpoint I’m enjoying seeing the machines being more human than humans, even the pacifist machine life forms in the first season. I’ll get into the source material properly after the anime finishes, it’s clearly worth it.

Oh c'mon, I just finished episode 3 and was like: Yeah!! With everyone else gone, there now is no reason for 2B to kill 9S anymore!! They can finally have a happy ending after all this is over! ...and now you're telling me this is somehow gonna end in a tragedy?? Aww man and here all I wanted was for 9S and 2B to be happy... Oh well, maybe that will be the case in a possible Season 3? I didn't look at the spoiler part, but hopefully I'll be able to brace myself a little for what's to come this season...

"there now is no reason for 2B to kill 9S anymore!" .... hmmm this indeed is one way to look at it, however do consider the fact that they are now completely isolated on earth, with no bunker or assistance, and as the command clearly stated in the third episode, they are also now the last standing YorHa units, so everything that could've gone wrong, went wrong.

Well as for a third season, that would be very unlikely as the game had 5 main endings. 2 early endings (A,B), And 2 real endings (C,D), and one true ending (E).

Routes A and B lead to A,B endings respectively, and they are the same we saw in the 1st cour (where they killed Adam and Eve and were reunited thereafter).

Route C leads to C,D,E endings, all of those follow the same plot-line to reach a different conclusion, basically near the end of the game, you will be given two equally depressive options, each one leads you to a different ending, and finally you can have an additional ending by deleting your save files, which just show you a cut-screen of another alternative ending (the weird happy E ending)

And the spoiler tag is just a meme about how Yoko Taro is brutal with a certain character, not really a spoiler but might as well avoid it!

@FutoiOtaku Humanity didn't get wiped out by a disease. The White Chlorination Syndrome was going to destroy humanity via infecting your soul. So humanity devised a way to combat this by separating the soul/gestalt/shade (same thing, different term) from the body and created replicants to act as a vessel for the souls to eventually return to once WCS was gone. What actually killed humanity was Nier (the replicant) killing the Shadowlord (Nier's Soul) after Weiss refused, due to amnesia, Project Gestalt protocol, to reunite all the shades back to their bodies, reviving humanity. The shades were made from the Shadowlord's essence so they all died when he died, dooming all the replicants. Without souls, all the bodies died and could not be remade in the image of their respective souls like before.

@Agafaba He's not correct, humanity survived the White Chlorination by splitting into gestalts and could have become human again via completing Project Gestalt. What killed humanity is Nier killing the Shadowlord.

@SteelLad I have returned after watching the final episode of the anime (took me a while to get to it) and I have questions. We kinda sorta did get a happy ending for 2B and 9S after all in the anime, so now im curious... Is the ending where 2B and 9S come back to life with their memories restored after their pods sacrificed themselves to make it happen an anime original ending or is it the weird happy ending E from the games you mentioned before? 🤔
