So, I’ve only watched 2 episodes, but now I’m kinda curious.

A long time ago I once asked random Japanese people if doing something like this (below) would be possible in Japan, and they replied that you’d most likely get arrested unless you have a permission to perform that you can theoretically get at the police station.

And yet, the girls were freely performing in the street without getting any unwanted attention from the cops. I’ve also seen similar scenes in anime like Selection Project, in which an idol group was performing their mutual song in the street to gain some recognition and followers so that they would be able to negotiate with the label.

Can someone please explain me how this works?

In the least complicated way, I can explain this is it is a fictional show. It has no bearing on reality. It’s as simple as that. Besides, the show is excellent.

maybe there just weren't any cops around at the time. Like they performed for all of a few minutes. Also the person whose performance they interrupted did have a permit, I'm pretty sure.

While I haven't lived in Japan, it's not like cops just automagically appear somewhere the second someone starts playing music. There's a scene in Bocchi the Rock where this comes up, and the police officer just politely tells them they have to stop bc they don't have a permit fwiw.

There's certain streets and areas in Japan where you can do live performances. Even then, you have to get a legal permit to do so and follow certain rules like you can't be really loud.

Oh, ok, that’s nice.

Well, at least it’s better that having to bribe the cop so that he would screw off for the rest of the day.
