Restoration seen during Japan Film Festival Online 2024

Surprisingly streamlined cinema adaptation of Tezuka's adventure comicbook series, it makes for a more pleasant start than the TV show despite some rough patches early on.
Of course, today's audience will see you get the death of the father something 'cliché': it starts with a poor orphan, who will gather helpers around him and have to become stronger (training sequence included), the film culminating with a big "boss" fight. But it is effective enough, especially past the beginning.

Seeing talking animals stand and move around like animals was refreshing, especially in a pre-90s work, hearing the musical moments less so.

Score: 6,5/10
Enjoyment: 4/5

This film contains ethnic, racial and cultural prejudices common in Japanese society at the time of its production. The creators did not intend to be insensitive, but we take this issue very seriously. We are showing this film today because we feel we must convey its themes to the world, including love of family and the dignity of human life. The art of animation is an important part of Japanese culture, and it is our duty to preserve it. We firmly reject all forms of racism and discrimination. Rather than suppressing representations, we want to learn from them and engage in constructive dialogue to create a better future.

As if this kind of statement is needed for people attending cinema festivals...
