Putting this out first, no. Neither official subs nor fansubs have dropped yet. And while I am a fan, and these are subs, I won't consider them actual fansubs.
I got impatient waiting for someone to sub this in an official or unofficial capacity... so I did it myself... kinda. The raws have Japanese subtitles on them for accessibility, so I ran them all through Google Gemini Pro 1.5, with the instruction to "preserve honorifics and formatting", and to "Remember to translate the Gegege no Kitaro character names correctly, so Nezumi Otoko stays Nezumi Otoko, Medama Oyaji stays Medama Oyaji, Neko Musume stays Neko Musume, and yokai keep their names too." The resulting subs are... actually pretty decent. Not perfect, a touch dry, but not as bad as I would've expected for AI slop subs. If you have the raws, then you can watch them with my attempt at AI translated subs. God this took a lot of trial and error...
(As the big red bar at the top of this topic suggests...)
(...do NOT ask me for the raws, or for any assistance in finding them.)
Honestly, I'm surprised how well the subs came out. All I did to it after was add the subtitle for the year, and lobbed off the extra accessibility bits like sound effect descriptions and such. Don't know why those were in the original Japanese subs, but they were. I did leave the names on the subtitles, since it's honestly kinda helpful having it there. Yes, a piece of dialog seemingly got lost at roughly 1:03:27, but it's not very important. Also the subtitle timing started getting a bit fucky just before the hour and a half mark, so I had to fix a good deal of timings as such. Eh, it was worth the night of sleep I sacrificed to get them looking right.
CORRECTION: There are fansubs, but they're locked behind a "Must join to see" screen on Tumblr. Oh well. They're easy enough to find on Google. Would've been nice to know this before I went and made subs myself. 🤷
Hell yeah! This was worth the wait! Everything here lived up to the hype, and then some.

Mizuki, a salaryman working for a pharmaceutical company, visits a remote village in search of the secrets to the mysterious "M" drug. He learns of the Ryuga family, who have long ruled the village and their connection to the drug. Intrigue deepens as Mizuki encounters a strange individual named Gegero, whose wife disappeared years ago and is believed to be somewhere in the village. The village itself is plagued by bizarre events, the deaths of family heads, and rumors of a curse connected to a forbidden zone called the "anagura".
Partnering with Gegero to uncover the truth, Mizuki discovers that the Ryuga have been exploiting the Ghost Tribe, Gegero's people, for their blood to create "M". He also learns that Sayo, a young woman he has become fond of, is possessed by a powerful yokai, Kyokotsu, born from the collective grudge of the Ghost Tribe. As the village descends into chaos and the Kyokotsu rampages, Mizuki must face the consequences of the Ryuga's actions and find a way to stop the curse that threatens to consume everything. !!Arbitrary plot runthrough!!
Toei and the other collaborating studios really did a good job with the animation. And the sound design too, it's all so good! And I forgot how good this franchise is with going right from horror to comedy. Fuckin' Nezumi Otoko's sudden appearance after the big fight over the will was NOT what I expected.
Overall I'm quite happy with how this movie was. It didn't feel like "just an episode of the 2018 TV anime", and actually felt like it really needed the whole hour and 45 minute runtime to tell the story it was trying to tell. By the way, HOLY FUCK THAT FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY!!! I don't notice that sort of thing unless it's really good, and it's REALLY good here. I was grinning ear to fucking ear during that fight scene between Gegero and those masked guys. I'll absolutely rewatch this once either a proper fansub or official subbed version comes out. 9.75/10, I loved the hell out of it! The ending was the cherry on top. This is why I love this franchise so much, right here.
Nice to see Kitaro's dad when he wasn't just an eyeball. Even then he still loved baths! I really like the added context all this gives to the original story. I was wondering if Kitaro would be born without an eye or if Mizuki would knock it out like in Hakaba, but that wouldn't fit the tone of this film at all XD Mizuki's character is certainly quite different in the film and I guess the 2018 anime and Akuma-kun netflix show by extension. It is a shame Kitaro himself wasn't featured as much, but I fully expected that going into the movie based on the title. Whilst we were experiencing the flash back it was almost like a Kitaro episode was playing out in present day and we got to see the end of it.
Nezumi Otoko was the smartest character in the movie and ran away when things started to get too crazy.
Kenji Kawai soundtrack and rural village gave me Higurashi vibes of course, some really great music. We only got some slight strings of the Kitaro theme at the beginning, but I think I could hear the ending of the 90's anime incorporated into the music at the end. Really glad one of my fave musicians was chosen for the film.
I'm looking forward to giving his a re-watch in the future, I did get a bit lost in the family heir stuff at the start, but I got a hang of all the names better as the film went on. This is a 9/10 for me.
I liked the more serious and investigative tone. It has a much darker and more mature atmosphere compared to other adaptations of the franchise. The visuals are quite eerie, reminiscent of classic Japanese horror films. Medama Oyaji suffered a lot, but he remains an incredible father, even in that unusual form as a talking eyeball.
I felt sad about his wife’s death, but it was expected. The film never explicitly states what kind of yokai she is. She blends in well as a human, which could indicate that she was a yokai closer to humans (which she truly seems to be) or even a hybrid. The movie never explains this directly, which only adds to the mystery.
The scene where Kitaro rises from the grave was really intense, especially with that dark and melancholic tone. It reminded me of the beginning of an older GeGeGe no Kitaro version.
I wish there were a spin-off showing Kitaro’s life with Mizuki. Or did he not live with Mizuki? Maybe just for a short time? Perhaps Mizuki was one of the first humans to help Kitaro before he set off on his journey as the protector of balance between yokai and humans.
But I did some research, and it turns out
Mizuki actually became Kitaro’s adoptive father and raised him during his childhood.
I also read that
Mizuki is meant to represent Shigeru Mizuki himself, the creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro
