Going into Hanma Baki VS Kengan Ashura, I kept my expectations realistic. I knew this crossover wasn't going to do anything interesting with these characters and play it extremely safe, yet I was still disappointed.

The fights weren't even that good. The best aspect was the character interactions, although having characters from Baki and Kengan Ashura already know each other was so weird. However I respect the desire to push the story forward and get straight to the fights, skipping character introductions. Just as storytelling, it is a double edged sword and makes the crossover impossible to believe. But that is all fine.

But the big problem here is the fights felt underwhelming even with modest expectations. Most of the fights had lackluster fight choreography compared to both Baki or Kengan anime series. In this crossover, most of the fights were punches mindlessly being hurled, and then the final battle was just Baki spamming all his techniques against Ohma. What makes both Baki and Kengan Ashura series individually so fun is the creative fight choreography. Which was lacking in this crossover. Also the ending was underwhelming.

Overall it was just okay, but the post credits scene got a laugh out of me.

It was fine, for a 1-hour film that was done in only a few months, this was the best we could hope for, and even though it didn't do both series enough justice, the ending makes me hopeful that if this is successful, there is a possibility for a crossover series (that has it time to cook in the oven and isn't as rushed as this film) as the film sets up for a crossover universe with infinite potential

Or maybe that's just me wanting to see Baki and Ohma having a meal with each other, shooting the shit, they have best bros potential in every sense of the word, the rivalry is there, but there is no animosity, and Ohma's stoic yet fight hungry nature blends perfectly well with Baki’s laid back yet at times, sharp way of life. That dynamic in itself is bound to make many memorable moments in an awesome buddy fighting series.

Plus we get to see more matchups for other characters too, which is always exciting!

@A-lil-weeb-dog I agree with you completely. I hope we get to see more. With the escaped death row prisoners showing up at the very end, this hints that there could be a continuation.

The Baki anime only has 2 more arcs to be animated before it catches up to the current manga arc. It would be so awesome if we could get this Baki VS Kengan spinoff series at some point in the future. Maybe to take the place of the Baki anime for awhile until more manga content gets made to adapt? Lol I am being optimistic here.

yeah, I also want to see Baki in his Rahen version vs Omega Ohma, like they have learned that they both need to get stronger for their rematch, which makes sense if they bump into each other in the future, they are both much more powerful than now, which would make their fights much much much much more enjoyable

plus, at least that fight needs to last as long as the father-son fight, or else it's not enough justice for both series

@A-lil-weeb-dog Oh, yeah, like multiple episodes dedicated to one fight would be so cool. Hopefully, this short movie is more like a trailer for what could be. Current Jack from Rahen would be an absolute monster to take on for the Kengan boys.

I'm shook they cut the fights short with cheap plot devices. I want to see full fledged fights with the true Baki lore behind the strength/fight choreography.
Knowing Netflix they'll milk the crossover with a few seasons (I'm hoping)

yup, I think current Raian is also a monster, which makes their rematch even more hype, i just wish they could braw in the streets like how the death row inmates fights were, it’ll be much more interesting that way

Yep, I'm on my knees begging for a fully-fledged production of a crossover series

realistically baki’s verse would demolish kengan’s but it was still fun seeing them go head to head

Raian kure’s fight was more interesting than baki’s imo but hopefully they do better next episode cuz they did tease yujiro

Not very good. Very skippable special. You're right it was surprising how bad the fights were.

I don't know what’s so surprising, it’s Baki, it’s to be expected

They should have made this crossover into a very grandiose series rather than an hour-long movie. I missed a lot of what I saw in the Baki and Kengan series. I hope they rethink the concept and maybe turn it into a really great series.

This is a fandom that is almost impossible to please, before the biggest complaint I saw about Baki was that the characters didn't exchange serious punches, and now where we actually see the characters hitting each other sequentially without any interruptions, people complain again, really. impossible to please the fandom, well, speak for yourself, I loved it.

@Gan5849 I don't understand why you complain about the script, it seems like you've never watched Baki or Kengan Ashura

I watched both series, the point is that it could have been done much better. In my opinion, what we got is shit

I really dont understand why they made this. Hopefully it was cheap and for some friendly fun between the mangakas.
No epics fight and the important fights were ending in a draw. If they make another one and only main characters vs each others with results, it would be nice. But can't see that happening since they would make one series a favour over the other.
