Like the title says. Is the anime faithful to the light novel or does it cut things? I liked the first season and the second season even more so does one get a better understanding if I read the light novel?

to answer your question yes one does get a better understanding if you read the novel but to answer how faithful it is here:
for the 1st season you were told enough to kind of understand whats happening, all though some were cut, the other heroes are introduced in the 4th volume meaning before episode 11 of season 1, rambrant's backstory is completely skipped, basically in season 1 you get maybe 65% of what happened in the novel.
season 2 cour 1(aka first 12 episodes) : very rushed skipped some, mind you some stuff might not be very important. you got maybe 40% of what happened
season 2 cour 2(episodes 13-25) : very slow, still skipped some, paced horribly, you got about 60% of what happened
overall its more faithful than most but I would still suggest just reading the novel, thats what I did after like episode 18

I didn‘t expect a so detailed answer but thanks a lot. Guess I will read the light novel after the final of season 2.

How far ahead is the LN compared to the anime?

Obviously the LN will have more to offer than the anime.
Like the person in the 2nd post mentioned, The show has been basically speed running through events since the beginning of this season.
