So based from what I’ve seen in this show so far. Sakura seems to embody this idea of the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy (SFP). It’s an idea in both sociology and criminology which suggests that if a person is being labelled with names based on their looks/appearance or any beliefs that a person may have against you, then this may influence a person to supposedly live up to those beliefs that people had of them in the first place.

In the first episode straight away we see Sakura is struggling to keep a hold of his own identity and who he is, as seen with him walking on a tightrope trying to make it on the other side. But he’s being clouded with all these thoughts of being seen as a ‘monster’ or ‘weird’ or even ‘gross’ just because of his hair and eyes. Eventually he breaks and decides to say “fine, that’s who I am, and I’m going to live this way”.
Even during the episode when in Bofurin, he acts hostile to others out of his perception that he is indeed a ‘bad person’ or a ‘monster’, so he should be seen and accepted as such right? But this town says “screw that” and literally welcome’s people like him with open arms. It’s the idea that this kind of place exists isn’t normal to Sakura because in the past he was always being accused and seen as a bad person, and that’s just how delinquents like him are supposed to be seen, as big bad intimidating figures who disrupt the peace not preserve it; my man can’t even take compliments that’s how much he’s been through mentally with the hate/assumptions.

All in all, I think this really does highlight an issue that many people like Sakura go through. Especially in today’s day and age with society making people feel unwanted and like outcasts, hence my proposal on SFP.
(I may be wrong and you don’t have to base this on what I say. I’m just applying something I’ve learnt here because it really stuck with me when I saw how Sakura was acting with other characters and such; I may not be right too on what SFP fully means but I just wanted to put my word out).

Overall I really like this series and I can’t wait to see more come from it!

Interesting and well written! I’m interested to see how Sakura grows throughout the season.

I think you could definitely be on to something here. I also think we all struggle to accept certain parts of ourselves. Especially if these parts are viewed as taboo by others.
It's going to be interesting and relatable~ ^^

That’s a great analysis, thank you for sharing! I think I agree with you, because when I watched the first episode, I thought that Sakura was finding comfort in fights, and he just wants to be the best of the worst, literally the worst of what people consider him to be. Therefore, when watching the first episode, I immediately thought that it could be an interesting anime/character with a lot of potential and development – overcoming past trauma and accepting that you are not a bad person as compared to what others say about you. :)

Yeah definitely. I wouldn't say it's far-fetched at all, and it's a pretty common character trait in lots of anime, and fiction in general.

I think this theme hits especially hard in Japanese culture, where the idea of what's "normal" and "expected" is very clearly laid out and strongly enforced. The Persona games are basically built on this idea, and every character in the main cast struggles with how the people see them and how they see themselves; hot popular girl, arrogant rich kid, studious model student, violent delinquent, etc. Persona 4 has a delinquent character who also just gave up and committed to the lifestyle, partly because people kept making assumptions based on his intimidating appearance and gruff personality.

Also, it's funny that the voice actor for Sakura played quite a few similarly "misunderstood" delinquent characters: Kyo from Fruits Basket and Kudou from Kono Oto Tomare!, to mention a few that I recognize.
