While I did really enjoy the film, I would consider it one of my least favourite of his films.

I love/like all his films, so this isn't a knock against Heron per se, I just don't consider it to be one of his best.

all of his films for me personally have been rated 7+
this film however extremely disappointing considering all the reviews and media surrounding it's success. not what I expected from one of his films nor the ridiculously high praise from film critics. rated a 6. that's not to say it was bad, just a let down.

I say it’s one of his weakest. Animation was still beautiful at some parts, but I feel like we’ve seen better or at least more creative works in his previous films. Story-wise it was definitely not as compelling. I feel like this movie called us to pay more attention to the plot rather than its animations, and even then, it left many people confused and unsatisfied. I can understand when a movie lacks in story to deliver more of a creative art piece, but this movie felt like it lacked largely in both compared to his other films.

I think it’s one of his best and will age well. It has a lot of depth and symbolism that should work well with re-watches. Most of the criticism I’ve seen has been around how complex the plot is perceived to be, but I think the story is quite straightforward and people are just being frustrated by knowing there’s more there than they get out of it on the first watch.

On the surface it’s a fairly simple story about a boy coming to terms with his grief and changes in his life. I think Miyazaki has written and directed films with equal emotional resonance that more clearly communicate what they are about, for me it sits below those but above works that I found to be meandering and less intentional.

Idk I've only seen a few of his films (Nausicaä, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and this) and for me personally they're all kind of on the same tier. Really hard for me to pick favorites or least favorites, they're all in the 9-10 range.

I've seen every one of his movies and for me it's the weakest (I gave it a 7 and all of the others are 8+). It's definitely not the weakest Studio Ghibli film though.

@eeveetree What do you think is the weakest Ghibli film? If it's Earwig, what's the 2nd weakest?

I totally agree with this take. For watchers who can find the intricate and detailed symbolism as to how this movie relates to Hayao Miyazaki’s life, this movie is a masterpiece.

For those who aren’t paying as much attention and enjoy movies at face value, it seems to leave something to be desired.

I think they don't differ much at filmy4wapin. I've seen reviews about this issue

For now it is in the middle, below spirited away, mononoke, laputa, totoro. But above films like ponyo, wind rises, porco and kiki's.
With a re-watch, though, I am sure it will probably become one of my favorites of his.

This movie is a Universe in itself with so many layers. It is fascinating!
