So since there is some obvious doubt about her being an alien, episode 9 really brings up the most of what that plot twist may be. At first i thought she may been a runaway or homeless girl, but i think now is pretty clear with the last hints (of course, going by the assumption she's not an alien), Akeuchi in fact, doesn't exist and it's just in Umika's imagination, starting as a coping mechanism probably from her desperation and loneliness, this theory would explain a lot of things that just flied by in previous episodes without ever being questioned, like for first "how did an alien that just arrived on earth casually enrolled in a high school", this also can explain her telepathy power, cause of course she would understand everything umika is thinking since she's just her imagination.

So how exactly is episode 9 pushing this theory?
I guess it starts when Umika is giving up everything and then Akeuchi just casually disappears, when Umika tries to visit her house not only Akeuchi is not here, but none of her belongings are present (and as is stated later, Akeuchi didn't intended to leave so there would be no need for her to take really everything she have with her), the power of tower also cut off, which wouldn't really make sense. Akeuchi only reappears again when Umika is getting again desperate, and she kinda just appears, she wasn't here before, and from her previous stataments the only powers she poses is the forehead telepathy, so no teleportation or other gimmicks.

If we put everything togerther is making sense she's not real, and Matataki and Haruno are only playing around if they even do, to not hurt Umika. Also after competition in same episode no one talks with Akeuchi except Umika, but Mataki is directly agressive only with Haruno for losing her place in group, if anything Akeuchi never have significant interactions with anyone that doesn't directly involve Umika and never dicloses informations that Umika herself wouldnt know/show few scenes later.

Tldr Umika is/may be schizophrenic

After reading the whole thing I can say that I don’t think this is true. I do agree that yuu is probably not an alien but your theory has holes in it.

Firstly given the nature of the show making Umika schizophrenic would be really strange as this show is very wholesome most of the time.

Secondly given Raimon’s nature I could never see her doing that to umika she doesn’t seem like the type of person who would do that to umika. Also I’m like 90% sure we’ve seen Yuu interact with the others a few times without umika.

We’ve even seen the whole class laugh at umika before in a earlier episode so I highly doubt the whole class is playing along with Umika.

Your theory is possible but very unlikely imo. I believe Yuu has some kind of connection with the lighthouse I’m not really sure what but maybe it’s some kind of special lighthouse.

Or who knows maybe she is actually just a alien.

she could be an alien, but this have its own series of holes in the story (at least atm, maybe they'll be explained later who knows)

though it's not uncommon in japanese media to apply such plot twists, either for story reasons, like viewing the whole events in different eyes after getting that piece of information, for shock value, or any other reasons the author may have. Wholesome bait is also a possibility, things like the day i become a god got till almost the end of anime without revealing the main twist, though i guess most of them reveal such twists quite early in the story. Also not all cgdct animes have to abide by the rule that "nothing really important must happen during the story" and every episode have to be a non progress or the story shouldn't reach a climax, hoshikuzu seems like an story which progress the plot not a stale one

@RaidenSteiner I haven't seen the episode yet. I have seen animes do something like this before. Could be a ghost or spirit. After I watch the episode later tonight, I might revise what I said.

I don’t think it’s Fight Club like you outlined. I think she may be a real being that Umika CREATED tho, Haruhi style, if she’s not just an actual alien.
"Do you want me to take you away... to a place in this city where wishes come true?"

@RaidenSteiner I finally got to watch episode 9. Akeuchi mostly gave me ghostly feel. Kinda makes me feel it's one of those animes. The main character finally gets confidence and whatever helping them along the way says "You don't need me anymore go live a happy life" and disappears. I really hope that is not what happens. I'm really enjoying this one and can't wait for next week. I really want to say she's a alien like the show said.

I'd say Yuu is very real, since I've read up to Chapter 43 of the manga.

Just my thoughts, but Yuu being in Umika’s imagination doesn’t work given that Raimon obviously sees and argues with her, and even has a nickname for her based on her appearance (bun nut in English sub).
I have faith in the alien theory. It worked in Denpa Onna and Adachi to Shimamura. Cute schoolgirl aliens are something this world needs more of!

The possibility crossed my mind as well, but I think it's likely to be something dumber but less annoying, like requiring the power of friendship. Or that she's "gotta believe", like PaRappa the Rapper.

Yes, she seems to be an imaginary friend of Umika, the embodiement of her subconscious dreams and desires to have a friend and reach the symbolic stars; but no she doesn't non-exist, she is a real girl. It is no wonder she doesn't have memories from her past, or that she is pretty much the perfect girl Umika can make contact with (through "telepathy") and enjoy being with, but because it is a cartoon, a tale, the rules of the real world don't have to apply, so even a being born from inner dreams could have physical body. She almost disappeared in episode 9 because Umika seemed to let go of her dreams, but reappeared again when she called out to her. These kind of series will end with Umika becoming more mature and reaching her dream with the help of her and then after realising who she really is letting go of her in an emotional scene.

i also thought she wasnt actually an alien/a supernatural being but now in episode 9 when we saw her appear out of nowhere i think she is the essence of the star Umika wished on or she is the embodiment of the lighthouse. her being thw lighthouse would explain why the electricy works for some reason as long as shes there. could also be that the wishing star fused with the lighthouse somehow
