This article contains the list of top 5 most watched anime in Japan for the first half of 2023. Demon slayer surprisingly takes two spots (1st and 2nd).
Demon slayer swordsmith village arc came out first with an average viewership of 15.4 million and a total reach of 22.9 million.
Demon slayer special edit version of entertainment district arc came in second with an average viewership of 10.3 million and total reach of 22.5 million views.
3rd was sazae san. Detective conan and Chibi Maruko chan came in 4th and 5th respectively.

While the average viewership of SSV arc was a tiny bit lower than the previous season (entertainment district) when it aired, it still maintained a far bigger number than any other anime on the list and it shows the dominance of Kny in Japan. Also, individual episode 11 gathered a lot more viewers.

What are your thoughts on the list? Feels like demon slayer will be sitting comfortably at the top of the list for the whole year since no other anime has come close to this number so far.
Do you think the next seasons will maintain above 10 million viewership and if they adapt the infinity castle into movies, will it break box office records again.

First half of 2023 was rather "meh" with few exceptions, so no surprise there.

How can you say that JJK giving it competition when you say that it has significantly lower viewership? And animation-wise JJK is not even in the top 5 this year.
Based on previous years, the only show that could match those numbers is Spy X Family. It was really popular in Japan.

@ktg Yeah maybe competition was the wrong word to use. What I was trying to say is that Jjk s2 is the only other anime in the later half of this year which is getting some good amount of views. So Jjk might be in the top 5 of the later half of the year but overall, it won't beat Kny. That's what I meant.
Well it wasn't a contest of animation so that is not the part of the discussion.
Last year again, Kny yuukaku hen was the most watched anime in Japan. Spy x family did amazing as well. Much better than a lot of series this year. I don't know the exact data but it used to have around 1 to 3% without DVR and around 6% with DVR. Still lower than the average of entertainment district but a lot better than plenty of new series this year.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Right now even Sousou no Frieren has better viewership and it's the second half of the year.

@ktg Hmm. I just checked it out and yes you are right. I don't have the information for all weeks or DVR included but frieren does seem to have more viewership than Jjk s2. Thanks for correcting me, I take it back. I thought Jujutsu was doing way better in Japan but its rating is also around 2 to 3% without DVR which isn't a lot more than Spy x family's viewership without DVR. Frieren is doing 3 or more %.
