Heck I watched this without even knowing that there was an original 90's anime for this and still enjoyed the show.

Yes, only thing you'll miss out on is a more grounded understanding of who the previous characters are and what the themes of Akuma-Kun are all about. But this adaptation does a good job of giving the OG characters new characterisation.
