Officials have yet to give a reason for the title change. However, there are several examples of titles from Ghibli's past works that have not been directly translated into Japanese.
Mimi wo Sumaseba (If you listen carefully) -> Whisper of the Heart.
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Sen and Chihiro's Spiriting Away) -> Spiritted Away, etc.
You are right; the heron has little to do after entering the other world. However, looking at the story as a whole, you will see that the heron plays an important role.

| Yeah, I agree that Boy and the Heron has a better sound to it than How do you live? which feels really direct. @Doshigatai I feel like there maybe should have been more character development moments between the two as I got the other impression that they were kind of forced to work together by certain circumstances even to the end, not necessarily by friendship. But still I find your analysis on the movie in this thread and the review you wrote earlier interesting. I still feel like there's a lot of other symbolism lost to me through a cultural gap like what's the deal with all the birds but I still think I got something out of it. |
