I'm not sure what's the best fanfic but... there'll probably be something on AO3. You can pick your favourite tags and pairings so you can choose the most compatible and enjoyable fanfic for you.

Either than that, I don't read fanfics anymore but have you ever heard of "In another life?" /j

You should watch "I want to Eat Your Pancreas" and "Your Lie In April" another personal recommendation would be "Grave of The Fireflies".

These 3 anime are extremely good and if you're feeling depressed or empty on the inside they are a must watch to fill that emptiness inside

I don't really read fanfic, but if you don't mind a fantasy novel, then Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson has a similar plot device and romance. Reading it made me instantly think of this movie.
