The anime is more loyal to the themes and the story/characters of the original book (Both of them are an adapatation or retelling of the book “Anne from Green Gables” wrote by L M Montgomery). It is a wonderfull adaptation, reliying extremaly faithfull to the book dialogues and descriptions, showing an slice of life with incredible characters and artistic scenarios that resembles bucolism.

The Netflix adaptation picked the story and then decided to apply more heavy themes, maintaining only some of the facts and character names. Because of that, it differs a lot from the original purpose of the book, but i dont know if the series has quality or not.

The anime is one of the best (if Not the best one) adaptation of a literature book onto japanese animation. Made by nippon animation and by the hands of aclaimmed Isao Takahata, Akage no Anne (anime) influenced a lot of the anime production that camed after, and also remains with good visuals, direction and character development untill today. I would say that it is a must watch if you are into:

-slice of life
-drama
-buscolism
-anime classics
-literature adaptations
