Hello! I watched the whole movie and I don't understand why, in episode 2, Takaki stopped talking with Akari? Why the letters stopped? Why they didn't speak at the phone? Why they didn't keep in touch? Would you like to explain me? Thanks. |

Things in life simply happen when you are so focused on one thing, you forget another. |

Exactly it didn't make sense, they constantly reminisced about each other but for some reason they were too lazy to communicate with each other? |

So for my own interpretation after Takaki meets with Akari at the train station. He is filled with the idea that as long as they love each other they will conquer everything in their path. As we time skip to his high school days. In those times from the meeting at the train station till his high school days people grow so does Takaki. Takaki starts questioning himself whether his love with Akari will ever come true and decides to try to move on from his love therefore he stops messaging Akari. He also wants to stop holding back Akari and allow her to move on from him. The action of him writing letters but not sending to her could be interpreted as how his conflicted on trying to move on from Akari and yet still has lingering feelings for her. Now from Akari's perspective, perhaps she thought that Takaki no longer feels the same way as she did. Furthermore the distance between them might enlarge her uncertainty and idealistic love with Takaki. This film was just about how as we grow up things tend to change around us and we need to learn to move on and carry on with our own life. |

If you remember everything, you will realise Takaki was writing texts to himself. He had already forgotten about Akari, but he hadn't been able to move on. he used to feel like he misses something in life but he didn't know what it was. do you remember it when Takaki suddenly started wondering that when did he start writing texts to himself? |

The course of action taken by them is not so much simple but also not so hard to understand. Its very heartbreaking how Confusing and cruel situation can be. I think both of them stoped to feel strongly what the felt when the were young. Everything turns out to be there decision. But it was so heartbreaking to see akari with someone else and takaki still be confused like what happened with him or something. Well maybe ifs my boyish heart that thinks that way at least. |

I mean, what did he expect, they were at the age where they should have been engaged and eventually have kids, he let her go, and suddenly, after 10 - 20 years, everything could have been like in the beginning? |

Hmm , that's an interesting question but I think it's about how he still has that lingering hope that perhaps things could go back to what it was. Or perhaps a more common sense approach would be he recognized that it was the Akari that he has been longing for since they did not keep in contact after several years. Edit: On second thought I think it was how he wanted to see whether Akari would have stayed and look back at him like how he was looking back at her. In the end she didn't and he got his answer that she had moved on unlike him. Therefore he smiled and finally came to an understanding that he has to move on from her just like how she did from him. |

hey people, I don't know if any of you is aware, but there's a manga and a novel of this movie, both way larger than the movie, and they explain a lot of things, one of them being the reason for them to stop writing letters to each other in chapter 2. I'll post here 2 pictures, fragments of the novel "5 centimeters per second: one more side", where takaki talks about the reasons for their mutual correspondence to come to and end soon after he moved to the island. hope this clears all your doubts, if you have any more questions about some part of the story that didn't get well explained in the movie, I will do my best to answer it. also, I really recommend reading the novel for better understanding, since this was not the only thing that got bad explained |

First of all, the film takes place decades before advanced communication and mobile devices were widespread. During the first part, when they set out to meet each other, they had no means of communication, and one could feel the pain and frustration because of the uncertainty they were feeling. In the second part, Takaki is in Kagoshima, while Akarai was probably still living in Togichi. The distance is huge. We see Takaki had gotten a cellphone but he never sent the messages he wrote to Akari. When the distance increases, it's expected that the gap will also increase in a relationship. Takaki even though had never forgotten her, he was uncertain about his love interest, and that uncertainty took a toll on him, making it impossible for him to move on. Perhaps, it is also possible that he didn't want her to end up like him and wanted her to find happiness without him because it was uncertain that they'll ever get to meet, you can sense his fears at the end of part one, where they bid farewell to each other. That's my thoughts, correct me if I'm wrong. Hope that helped. |

(I mean some actual talk) especially to those who are far away from you. Personally I lost contact with various people who were once very close and good friends to me. That's what physical distance do over a period of time and that's the recurring theme of this movie "people get separated with the speed of 5 cm per second" |

Because she the first to accept the truth (that it's impossible for them to be in a relationship) and move on. Actually if you watch the last episode carefully you will know Akari too had a letter that she never gave to Takaki that day, which actually was most probably a goodbye letter but she wasn't able to give that to him that day as she saw that Takaki was actually very serious about their relationship and she didn't want to disheartening him and thought he will eventually move on with time. |

world_god said: I managed to rewrite it all pretty fast so, nothing happened haha. So, ill just leave this recreated asnwer.Hello, Still have one question: why do you think Akari accepted the reality faster than Takaki? Why she wasn't like Takaki... why she didn't feel empty like Takaki? Well, that’s a complex question, and its been ages since the last time I read the whole book (the one form which I answered to your previous question). But anyways, ill do my best. (Most of the events I will talk about are from the novel, since the movie, again, doesn’t explain a thing). It is related to the differences in the ways they both took the separation thing and their views on the matter. When they kissed under that cherry three, they had a perfect, magical, and reveling moment. But with it, they both understood that they were probably never going to meet again. But then, ¿Where comes the difference in how they ended? First of all, the reason for Akari to not give him the letter she had written isn’t exactly to not hurt him, as the other person above me interpreted. It was, actually, for the same reason that takaki didn’t regret having lost his letter in the way there where he tells her he loves her. And this reason was, that the moment they shared under that three, same as their relationship and feelings for each other, was too perfect and magical to be put into words. The mere words “I love you” didn’t even begin to describe all the things than they fell for each other, and that made the letters they both wrote just a meaningless collection of words, a disgrace to that perfect moment and years together. As you might have noticed, this is what takaki is talking about on the pages I posted in my answer to your previous question, and its exactly the same for Akari. So, instead of giving him the letter, she tells him: “You are going to be ok from now on, takaki! I just know it!” And her reason to tell him that, is to return the favor hi once did for her, back in their early days. In her childhood, Akari was a really timid person. You see, this, again, even though is really important, wasn’t even shown for at least a second in the anime. When Akari was a child, her family used to move from town to town pretty often, which leaded to her having to change schools frequently. And the first time this happened to her, someone made fun of her because of her name (it was pretty uncommon outside of her original town), and this made her act more timid, which just made her a wider target for malice the next time she changed schools. You know, that its just how kids work, the weaker the person, the more they want to bother them. And that just made her act more and more timidly leading to more and more bullying and so on. It was so terrible that it reached a point where she wished to die before having to change schools again. Because of all this experiences, she grown as someone really traumatized, with a heavy fear for rejection and other, unable to even look at someone in the eyes. And this was about to start again on Tokyo the moment she froze on her feet after the teacher called out her name on the list and people started to talk bad about her when someone near her murmured “everything is going to be okay”. Those simple words were what her, without knowing, had been longing to hear forever. And it was enough to made her come back to her senses and rise her head, which saved her from being bothered by the rest, and even allowing her to make some friends at the end of the day. Sometime later, she learned on the library who the owner of the voice was, who was takaki, and that’s how they first met. And as they spoke, she noticed that they had a lot in common, since his family also used to move very often, but takaki wasn’t as affected as her because he had a more calculated approach to fitting in school, but still enough to comprehend her feelings. And this made her feel understood by someone for the first time ever. And that englobes what made their relationship so special to Akari. It allowed her, a self-deprecating person who was sure that would die unloved, to feel understood, to have someone who cared for her, someone to chase after her, that wouldn’t brush her hand aside, and to feel all that happiness and beautiful things that she had been private of. And all of that leads to that moment. She knew that the separation was going to be tough for them both, so, as she received those words when she needed them the most, now she was returning the favor to him, while, at the same time, she gave those words to herself. Even after those childhood days, even worse times came form her when she was forced to move to Iwafune for similar reasons, but when takaki did all the sacrifice to see her again, and they met, she got transformed. As she says, “I had been blessed”, and now, she wanted to pass that bless she received once again to takaki too. She had been depending on him for too long, and now, it was time to change that, it was time to be able to be strong on her own. “Takaki was gone. However, I stood there, confident that I could take on life. No matter how far he went, he was with me. He, at last, will always understand me perfectly, I have such a person- that thought alone was reassuring, and I could make it, even if I was on my own there. Oh, what to do with me… While I felt a deep sense of loss, I was strangely fulfilled. So, I told myself. We will meet again someday, though it won’t be soon, and ill try to be a stronger person by then”. As we can see, she took a very gratitude directed approach to their separation, and instead of being drawn by the desperation ending in a full of melancholy life, she thanks him for everything he gave her during those years, and takes the chance to change herself. Now, on the side of takaki, lets remember that he was also conscious of the fact that they would never meet again. But at that instant, the only thing he could think of was how powerless he felt, for the inability he had to change the events that leaded to their separations and his inability to protect her. And he kind of associate this inability to his weird, young age, which makes him wish at that moment to be an adult right away. And that single and simple but strong wish, is what ends up leading him to move across life nonstop, making him a machine that was only able to move foreward without stopping, in a long, long trip far beyond the limits of the universe. A solitary trip, that didn’t allow him to even breath and look at his present. It was so of a strong wish, that even when he had almost forgotten Akari completely (because yes, that eventually happens in act 2) and that trip became aimless, that feeling just didn’t vanish, that urge, that necessity, to just keep moving, stayed with him, separating him from his surroundings. It even reaches a point where every time his starting to get used to the island and be happy with his new life, he starts to feel bad again, because he sees that happiness as a betrayal. And more than a betrayal to Akari, a betrayal to his young self, to that strong wish, not only to protect her, but to protect that special feeling they used to share back then. At the end, that is the meaning of the title “cosmonaut”. The spaceship than appears multiple times during the act is nothing but a metaphor of him and his aimless, solitary trip towards the limits of the universe. And that way of being is the reason for Kanae to not telling him how she felt. At the end, he never really looked at her, or anything surrounding him in his life. And that’s it, that would be the explanation for them to end up so different once they get separated. It all has to do with that moment, on their final farewell, and that’s why than scene is so important. Finally, in the book where I got all of this from, at the end, there are the 2 cards they wrote back then and never gave to each other, including the one from Akari, which didn’t appear in the anime, so, its more special. I will post the pages containing them because they resemble quite well all I have talked here. Congrats for reaching the final, it took more than expected hahaha. Hope It clears out many things. |

There’s a lot of insight in the light novel version on how their long distance relationship and the hardships of communicating started to consume their lives and was almost a sort of venting of frustration and it wasn’t healthy for the both of them hence the eventual stop of their back and forths. |

world_god said: "Things in life simply happen when you are so focused on one thing, you forget another." But Takaki never forgot about Akari. Does that mean that she stopped talking to him? Maybe. But with everything that they showed us it seems like they just drifted apart. They both grow up and continued their life. |
