To start I really enjoyed the story.. it was at times bitter but then joyful. The animation as expected was very nice.. even nicer yet were the backdrop visuals and the colors which were lovely. As far as character designs Josee's was the most pleasing to watch, then the library girl and Josee's Obachan. I think there were many other positive things about the film, but I wanted to touch on the OST which I'm mixed on.

The OST was at times jarring to be frank. In fact it nearly ruined the film for me. Still I was compelled to power through these rough parts. I believe most of the OST was great and I am certain the composer is talented as his work in Violet Evergarden is lovely. But the parts with the percussions, clapping, and chanting in Josee's OST did take me out of immersion. I believe I was reminded too much of western style film music, and not exactly the great kind either, but the most industrial, blue print sounding kind. It was appalling to the point that it makes me believe the composer was compelled to write such music because of some odd perceived necessity. By the way it sounded I believe it was meant to be uplifting and I am sure it was to some..

What do you guys think? Did the pop like, western style music instill similar feelings in you?

Which song are we talking about here exactly? Are we talking about Eve? Because then I don't know why you brought Violet Evergarden up.
But no, the OST was perfectly fine.

And let's not call that western style music. While the "regular" pop originates from the west. It started around 1950, while j-pop is older. J-pop started even before WW2, around mid 1920s. And you can hear j-pop here.

I don't have any specific knowledge when it comes to judge music

But talking about this particular movie, the only positive thing I would say about the OSTs is that they did their job in giving you those right emotions when it actually wanted to deliver it's emotional punch

However, overall there wasn't any unique ost I could think of to distinguish it from many other movies like we got some S-tier osts in the movies like Kimi no suizo wo tabetai, etc. so yeah I can understand how the ost could have ruined your enjoyment here

they were referring to the score by Evan Call, who also did the soundtrack for Violet Evergarden.

the music by eve would more probably fall under insert/credit themes

I am not talking about Eve. The Eve track was fine. As Ive said already it’s the tracks with the percussion, clapping and occasional chanting. These mostly played in the parts where we are briskly shown how our protagonist make their strides to develop themselves.

Take a closer listen and you will often times hear pop.. not Jpop like the Eve track which was nice as an end track.

That aside, romantic era styled music would have made this movie shine brightest.

Yes there weren’t many stand out tracks.. One that does come to mind is a short but lovely track that plays when Tsuneo brings Josees the fish lamp and they share a wholesome moment. There were probably a couple other nice onces im sure, but overall as you say there is no stand out.

And really im ok with that as long as the music.. fits. And it mostly did besides some bits.

Also “Kimi no suizo wo tabetai” that is one crazy sounding title. Sounds intriguing. And you enjoyed the OST too. I will mark it to give it a watch and a listen.

Each and every OST of Kimi no suizo wo tabetai is done very beautifully....

Starting from the Epilogue to the Main theme, I may have a Lil biased opinion towards it in general, but I hope you will recognise the beautiful osts of this movie

Very beautiful movie.. it tore my heart out and still hangs in my mind days later. As you said the music is excellent. It was apparently a first time anime movie composition for that composer. I really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing.

I am really glad that you liked it :)

All those osts and theme songs were done very beautifully & I am still searching for a movie which could compete with it in terms of that

Girls Last Tour is an anime show largely about what being human means. Its a fantastic anime and part of the reason it gets a 10/10 from me is because of it's lovely OST. Similarly Darling in the Franx got very high scores from me because of it's OST, the couple of vocalized tracks which were produced for the show and sung by one of the protagonist in the show. DiTF is a show with many ideas; off the top of my head its a coming of age story that delves measuredly into existentialism, child trauma, abuse, neglect and consequently love. All delivered in at times over the top Scifi epic. If you enjoy thought provoking stories with heavy themes that center around love and the need for love you might enjoy these anime. Give them a try.

Really any show I’ve given a 10/10 is likely largely in part because of the OST. I find great OST to really draw out the sentimental side of me.

Edit: Ah you are in search of a Movie with great OST… hmm i’ve not seen many if its anime movies in particular. Ill let you know if I come up with one to recommend.

Edit2: Nonetheless Ill also add Puella Madoka Magica OST is pretty incredible… like the whole dam thing is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve only seen the episodic version… but its in movie format if you wish to watch it that way. But i can vouch for the OST of the episodic version.
