Spoilers for S1 I guess.
It pissed me off how Chise finally got everything she ever wanted and she just tossed it aside for some random dragon. But what pissed me off the most is that the show acts, up until the last 10 minutes of the last episode, like she did the most noble thing anyone has ever done and there is not a single pissed off person about her throwing away her life over and over, Angelica gives her a lil slap but thats it. Even when Elias messed up with Stella, Chise was properly angry at him and she showed him and told him, but with Chise neither Ruth nor Elias seem to really gaf that she did something that was going to cause her to die soon. And even when she fought Caligula or whatever his name was and said that him and Chise were the same, it felt more like it was justifying what the villain did instead of a commentary of what Chise did.

I read the synopsis for S2 and see that they actually do acknowledge this, but I dont understand why they couldn't do it much earlier in the show. I spent the last 6 eps of S1 pissed off and rolling my eyes at everything Chise did cause of this. Still gonna watch S2 tho

You really didn’t understand the first season at all.

Sad how people rant and rave, only to display such ignorance.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I understood it completely. But it was very annoying that it took the last 6 episodes to the point that Chise's flaw was actually aknowledged. Self-sacrifice is dope in shows when it is shown as something that if you do constantly its because you have issues, with Chise it didn't seem like that was going to be the case for most of the show which soured about a quarter of the first season for me

It isn't not acknowledged, though. Chise's inability to value herself due to her tragic life experiences is one of the main themes of the show.

If you understood the show, then wouldn't you know that Chise's past history caused her to always think of herself last and sacrifice herself even to point of even death?

She didn't care about herself at all, that is what Elias tries to teach her, to not be reckless with her health and life, but to value the relationships she built in her new life.

So what I understood from you now is that you are pissed that chose throws everything she has more or less casually away and that multiple times and nobody is pissed about that but when Elias messed up chise was pissed

Well first of all chise doesn’t really know how to help someone without sacrificing herself and that’s one of the main reasons why she wants to go to the mages school so she can help more and especially without needing to sacrifice herself.

It’s understandable why Elias and Ruth aren’t really bothered about chise sacrificing herself the whole time. Ruth is ready to die with and for chise. If it’s her choice to sacrifice herself Ruth is going to either make sure she succeeds or is going with her. Elias doesn’t really know the humans morals, how human value life, or basic feelings like jealousy or love etc. he also always describes how it feels like for him. So it’s understandable why he isn’t shouting at her. But I believe he once confronted her with him feeling unwell by the imagination she being gone. But can’t remember when exactly that was.

I don’t think the show acts as if she sacrificing yourself is a good thing. I think it more or less wants to tell you that in sacrificing yourself it’s not about good or bad but more about the determination to deal the consequences. Chise never cried about her condition after her sacrifice and I think even apologized for being so selfish. Maybe that’s also the reason why nobody really bothers.

The thing with Elias and Stella is another case. I think Stella was that lil kid with the brother, one of chises friends. Elias messed up with her but only because of jealousy. That’s a complete different motive. He did it for himself, chise does it for others.

But that’s only how I see the show. I might be right but can also be wrong. Maybe this view helps to see it from another „angle“ lol 🫡

People who had it rough in life tend to be selfless, modest, timid and rather insecure.
They are anything but spoiled or bratty. Sometimes it even borders on pathological altruistm.
That's completely normal and quite realistic.

of course, that's one of the main themes of the show, I understand that she is self-destructive because of all her past trauma and she believes she doesn't deserve the good things unless she does some sort of self-sacrificing. But it was annoying in my opinion that the show itself only barely acknowledged it on the final episode on a little cute convo that almost fell like comedic relief. I just think if that conversation was moved a few episodes and it was taken more seriously, it would've given that aspect of Chise's character better development.

Thank you for explaining, I can see what you mean.

When I watched the first season, I wasn’t annoyed by what she did or how it was addressed at the time, but I was thinking of re-watching the first season then watching the second season right after, so I’ll make sure keep my eye on this next time.

Hope you have a good day!

If you understood Chise even just a bit, you prolly would've ranted about this less harshly, in my opinion. She acts that way because of her past, it is what it is, and I hope she grows to take care of herself more.

It seems you came from the future -- John Titor? -- because you already watched the 12 episodes of Mahoutsukai no Yome Season 2.

I understand why Chise pisses you off. She did some very stupid things. But, consider Chise has issues and she is not mature enough to deal with the world she was presented to. On Chise's favor, she is a good natured girl who does more for others than for herself.
