What's a 'familiar' ?

I haven't watched the original series but because this is a prequel i thought of watching this first.

All i want is for someone to explain what a 'familiar' is and why is that cat called a familiar.
(Pls keep it spoiler free)

Familiars are like contracted beings from a different dimension. Or just contracted beasts.... The cat is not technically Megumin's familiar since they haven't really formed a contract, but she said so to sound cool (All crimson demons including Megumin except Yunyun are chuunis)

Familars are quite a common thing in magic series I’m surprised you haven’t come across them already. But to make a long story short they are magical pets that you summon or have some kind on contract with.

You already got your answer with the posts above , so i'll just add that "Prequel" just means that it happens before in the chronology , but is meant to be watched after.
Unfortunately , this term is very often misused (even by MAL themselves in the database) , so most peoples think that it means you have to watch "Prequel" series first. (It can leads to huge spoilers or simply toning down all the intentions original work.)

2 is this like your first fantasy anime cause familiars are like mentioned all the time 💀💀💀

3 familiars are basically a animal/beast/monster or anything like that, that’s been tamed/summoned/or just made into your control

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

a creature/demon/magical beast attending/obeying/assisting a witch/wizard/magi/bigger demon etc. usually but not always in the form of a small animal.

they're very common in magic folklore, fantasy stories, etc.

A witch's black cat would be an example of a familiar.

Depends on anime.
Type of familiars differ too. In some familiar is just a mascot. In other it helps witch with magic. In third they protect their magic user.
