I' just started reading this one and have to read the rest first, but i imagine she said it in the moment because she was nervous and self concious about being older, sinlge and with a kid and trying to push him away.

She literally works the same job as mc. Don't know if they work the same amount of hours, but if they do, they make around the same at the end of the month.
If she can take care of a kid with that job, why wouldn't he be able? She just shut him down with the first excuse that came to her mind.

Still.... lame excuse lol
