The reason this chapter in particular caught my eye was that it explores a frankly criminally underexplored issue so many artists face- money. While it seems easier than ever to earn a living doing art thanks to things like online commissions and the general rise in interest in purchasing art, the industry has still kept this sort of unapproachable feeling to it.
The stigma around all artists being poor combined with fine art’s mystical existence in the eyes of the average person and their idea that some people are just born with the talent for art all combine into this storm of misinformation in the public’s eye, which in turn leads to a lot of people taking advantage of artists and their work for their own personal gain. It’s that very corruption and disgust for it that we see in this chapter with how the value of Machiko’s art pieces had risen up only after her death, not for the quality of the art itself, but rather for the story that can be manufactured around it.
Understandably so, Yakumo and gang are quite disturbed at the situation, yet there’s not much that can be done about it. For one, they too require money to live in this world plus if they want to make art, let alone show it to the rest of the world, there are plenty of costs that come with, and so whether they like it or not, being an artist especially in the fine arts field means contributing to this problem.
This all cultivates in a bit of a reality check for Yatora. He likes to get into his head a bit too much and his time in Geidai hasn’t really left him with the space to realise until now that in the end while making good art is important, the university is there to teach him how to LIVE as an artist. Academics are not something that will get a person’s creativity and personal views out onto the canvas and so they don’t try to do so, instead they give the student the tools to last out in the harsh world for enough time that they can do so themselves. It’s in realising this that I believe Yatora will be able to truly embrace his university career and understand what it all ends up being for.
