Honestly this graphic should be official and at the end of last chapter (with maybe minor changes) Also did I missed something but I don't think timeline/loop 0 exists, Shinpei always was destined to receive the eye. Because I think for time travel in "loops timeline" we have "12 monkeys" rules and by erasing the whale we have "Back to the Future" time travel rules. So "timiline 0" shouldn't exists or should stop existing after he gets the eye. |

| @Nieznajomy43 Timeline 0 (the beginning of episode 1) exists because the ferry is completely empty and hizuru isn't sitting opposite shinpei, or even present (because she didn't receive ushio's message in this timeline). Unlike the ferry in timeline 1, which is full and with hizuru sitting opposite shinpei. There's a pretty clear clue that supports this, at the beginning of episode 1 (timeline 0) we can see shinpei's phone with the date and time and the same at the beginning of timeline 1, and the time and date are very close. Finally, we know that Hizuru and shinpei are both from Tokyo, so they should have been together on the ferry from the start, which is not the case in timeline 0. |

Heya! Thanks! I arrived at a similar explanation. One thing i cant understand though but i’m hoping you do is this. Why was there a need to close the loop? I understand it was a necessary thing the author had to write from a literary standpoint to explain how Ushio knew to contact Hizuru and how Shinpei got the eye in the first place. But there wasnt really any need for ep 24 Ushio to do all that since she had already successfully deleted the whale, thus changing history (which was established as something they could do when shinpei told Haine to leave on the same ep) at the time.
| @mcookie It's all about causality. The new timeline comes about thanks to all the events that happened in the anime, and if you erase the entire causality loop of the first 24 episodes, this new “present” can't exist. The loop must be closed for this new timeline to become tengible. |
| Finally, I'd like to end on a last assumption that explains why Ushio also remembers the events of the anime and not just Shinpei in episode 25. I see only 2 possibilities:
Think of shadows as computer programs with a memory identical to a hard disk (their shadow). With the resulting capabilities (the power to copy/paste data, duplicate them identically, share them with the human brain, edit their data as in an rpg, which affects their physical body, etc.) but also the constraints (possible storage limitations, possible corruption of their data, the possibility of losing their data or having it erased by another program (another shadow), bugs, etc.).
We later learn from the spin-off manga&LN Summertime rendering 2026 and its hidden manga sequel Ghost fixers (a SCP/Control manga I highly recommend), that Haine's new reincarnation possesses time-related powers and snippets of his old reincarnation. This means that all those who have come into contact with Shadow Haine have had their consciousness, their memory and even their power cross timelines to join the new one, where Haine's new reincarnation is located. Which means Shinpei and Ushio, who both possessed the eye of Haine for a time. Personally, I'm leaning more towards the second option, which is much simpler and in line with what we know about episode 25 and the 2 spin-off sequels. |
