| Great Short Story. 8/10. It was fascinating after the sudden reveal that she can do magic which she used as her selling point, but the best was her point of hopeless rage where she attempted to kill her instigator with words alone that were causing an earthquake and thunder when she was about to end her sentence of "I will kill you!". After being abondoned by her father to avoid his debt collectors, she unamusingly jokes about slavery and simultaneously quickly offers her services when the debt collectors come, even though it's too late to decline when they reveal to her that they don't force minors (she's 15 years old) to pay off debt. Homeless without her father, they take her in into their company to live and work for them to pay off her father's debt of 23,600,00 Yen. To pay their services they make use of her with her skills as a sorcerer. The story doesn't fully reveal the lore of its magic, but we're presented to intriguing unique abilities of which the protagonist Satoru uses. As a descendant of the school of gifted arts, she explains that they have abilities of divination, incantation and rain summoning. In the story we experience her mentioning the skill of being able to instantly create any food to the quality of a chef if she has the ingredients and remembers the taste. She also has the ability to find people through sense, which she claims is 60% successful, and 80% when she's met the individual. In this case, they ask her to search for a guy who owes them. Yanagiya. A self-centered man who resembles her father. After they capture him, he starts to hang outside of the building to pay off his debt, and taunts Satoru by projecting his own hate for others and desire to disappear, claiming that she's like her father which angers her... which is a foreshadowing in the portion of hate to what happens afterwards. After some time, while working, she senses an intense urge to kill, which she feels is from Yanagiya. Before the debt collectors can go to stop him themselves, she uses one of their wooden swords to use it as a broom to fly to the fifth floor of where Yanagiya is planning to kill the people who caused his debt. When she tries to stop him with words, he smacks her to the ground and mocks her again saying that she's a living nuisance. During that time, the boss debt collector who takes care of her arrives, and while she's on the ground, sobbing, she pitifully questions Yanagiya, and in her frustration of what her current life is, she screams for his death in rage, but as she's about to enact the final word of incantation through killing intent of will power (which is what evokes the strength of magic) the debt collector stops her from commiting murder. It's a shocking but later beautiful moment of growth and peace where in the end, she's back in school, still paying off her father's debt, but happy with her life and the people she has around her who care for her even if she's working for them. |
