Sorry, I know that this is going to really annoy fans, but I have to ask. The first half of the first season was pretty good, and the potential was there for a great series. I loved watching the show explore not only Ainu culture, but the state of northern Japan following the Russo-Japanese war. The relationship between Asirpa and Sugimoto felt genuine, and even though I hate Shiraishi for being "that character", there are some truly interesting side-characters and antagonists in those first 6ish episodes. The socio-economic climate of Japan at the time is the perfect setting for these villain's plots to take place, and while I can't empathise, it at least makes sense.

However... season 1 kind of trailed off into villain of the week shenanigans and the same 2 or 3 jokes repeated over and over again ag nauseum (the joke about miso looking like "osoma" didn't just get old, it was absolutely obliterated by overuse). The show begins to employ incredibly surface level humour even more then usual, it's often crude just for the sake of it, and those last two prisoners were particularly uninteresting (even if boner guy provided some insight into Sugimoto... that doesn't necessarily mean that boner guy was a particularly interesting character himself).

So, is this an Attack in Titian situation, where season 1 is decent but season 2 is where things start to get really good? At this stage, having watched all of season 1 and the OVA, I don't really feel like watching anymore.

So, to fans of the series: when does it get good again? Does it get good again? Without spoiling season 2 and onwards, if it does improve, why did it, in your opinion?

I feel like the absurdist humor is used a bit more frequently and intensely as each season progresses, but the story and character developments also get a lot better. I found that the style of humor grew on me after a while, but in your case you may want to consider whether you are intrigued by the story and characters enough to ignore the bits you aren't feeling.

It might not be the best show for you maybe. I feel like it never really changes in terms of humor for most of it but the story definitely progresses and as a person who read the manga I felt it got quite serious towards the end. If your willing to put up with the stupid humor then it’s a pretty good series in my opinion but it’s up to you.
