Why is this so highly rated? Am I missing something?

It’s not gory if that’s what you are looking for. From my take, I think it’s just good story telling. It’s more of a mystery kind of anime that tries to explore if ghosts are real or not. I don’t think this anime fits your ideal of a horror show. If you are looking for something Gory like saw then don’t look here. I only know a few that’s gory and creepy like Elfen Lied and Berserk.

I'm not too bothered about the gore element either way. I've watched Elfen Lied and love that. I enjoy mystery/thriller too but this just isnt gripping me from what the trailer showed, seems like the trailer promised a jump scare spooky ghost thing and it's not been scary at all

The first couple of arcs are kinda weak, but it does get better. The second half of the series has some very intense moments. That being said, the MC girl (can’t remember her name just now) is annoying all the way through the series.

The show is more suspenseful than straight horror. The second half of the show is where the mystery really picks up, but the show is not really an action based horror show. Rather it's a slow pace suspenseful mystery show. Frankly shows like this scare me more than horror shows and I found the story compelling and interesting so I gave it a high rating. However this might not be the type of show you're looking for

Really I want to know too I'm currently on ep 17 and still didn't know how this got this high rating more or less the moadt I can give this show is 5 or 5.5

It ends with a "read the manga" ending
Which I did, it was ok. Goes in a bit of a different direction, especially how the end of the anime played out.
