I watched this on the plane from Tokyo to Australia and it seemed like the only interesting movie the airline had.
It was a pretty good movie, the animation was top notch as expected from this studio :D
I liked the characters and the overall atmosphere.
Giving this an overall 7/10 which is good in my books
I recommend this for people who want to watch a comedy drama movie

Saw all the anime movies at AIF back in October and this was my favorite out of all of them. I still regret not being able to watch Children of the Sea on the big screen.

Also saw this in the cinema today. I thought it was funny, quirky and heart-warming. Overall an enjoyable watch.

I think it could have almost worked as a three episode OVA because of its slightly episodic nature and lack of a strong overarching plot. The movie essentially had three distinct stories that focused on Kikuko's relationships: one with her friend Maria and their classmates, one with the oddball Ninomiya, and the final and most important one with her mother Nikuko.

There wasn't much interaction between these arcs, story or character-wise, except for Kikuko's involvement in them. While not necessarily a bad thing, its combination with the movie's leisurely pacing did leave me wondering for about half the runtime when the plot was going to get moving. I was enjoying myself enough for it to not bother me too much though, and eventually realised that an overarching drama was not what this movie was going for.

I think this essentially came down to mismatched expectations of the what the movie is, and would be a good thing for anyone planning on watching it to know. This movie does not follow the typical three act structure, but rather is three somewhat concurrent, mostly unrelated stories that focus on Kikuko's relationships with the people around her. Keeping that in mind, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys light-hearted anime dramas.

I think this anime's humor was in poor taste about making fun of big people, but I loved the warm parts of the plot. I still think Kikuko would've been great if She was made Nikuko's real child. I felt like the story gave away the plot-device earlier on and it wasn't mysterious enough. The animation was great though, kinda reminded me of the ghibli vibes.

Those Ninomiya faces were silly but strangely funny to me

I quite liked it, but reminded me a lot of chocolat movie, even the ilving in a boat errant mood setting. The references to Totoro were not in the fan translation.

i really liked the movie. before actually watching it, i thought this was going to go down a more "resentful and embarrassed of their own parent" route. there were a few elements of that, but i'm glad it wasn't. the scenery alone i'd rewatch it for.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. The art style was very beautiful and reminded me of Ghibli. The soundtrack was pretty fitting. Overall, the message of the story seemed a bit predictable but it was still sweet and emotional in the end.

Studio 4C never disappoints. Children of the Sea was still miles ahead though. I watched in Japanese without subs and am not fluent so I guess I missed some lines. It was enjoyable, music was good, and ah man those drawings! But not sure what the plot was about at the end of the day. Like, human relationships? How to find your place, deal with friends, family?

Seen at the cinema.

A very pleasant watch with a surprising amount of socially "bad" elements in japanese society (initially introduced so casually the movie sounded like a fantasy, but eventually adressed) and a very realistic middle school drama (maybe too much, because it's as annoying as it was in your childhood).
But nothing in this slice of life movie links into the next subject, like a simple reviewing, some revelations exposed after 2/3 like you had suddenly just walked into another film. Sure, it's a chronicle but chronicles still tie roughly (thanks to theme for example) their episodes.

Visually pretty, despite some very awkward details (some hands scenes), with a colours palette and backgrounds that don't stir too much into strong digital look.

Score: 6/10
Enjoyment: 4/5

Visually the movie is a work of art: it went for the analog area of anime look, but it never felt retro, rather it gave life and weight to all the ordinary details. Even further, it's near impossible to depict rural Japan authentically if you don't go for that kind of realistic look (and for example if I try to remember the archery anime by KyoAni, all I can remember is special effects scenes and nothinig about the setting).

The story is very refreshing in its lack of drama, portraying the simple struggles of everyday life in a simple way. And at the end of the day, living is but a never ending sequence of trifle, but as both Nkikuko and Sassan say wisely, such trifles should be cherished because they embody living.

So a very light-hearted movie, but with a deep message about parenting, which is unusual enough to make it remarkable.

Hated this one, oh my... :(

@Rei_III

I don't remember why I felt like sharing my opinion on the community forum lol, I don't think it was agressively bad. Anyway, I still didn't like Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, especially when comparing it to Ayumu Watanabe and Kenichi Konishi's Children of the Sea. I thought they played it way too safe when it came to the plot, and hell, Nikuko was practically a gag character.

P.S: I love your favorites list, nice job!

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this little film. For the first half it felt like a pure comedy mishmash with basically an iyashikei vibe of this port side town but by the second half I honest to got started sobbing my eyes out. The story of how Nikuko became Kikuko's mother really shattered me to bits. And the relationship she had with Miu was so tender and the entire flashback had me really broken up. The entire film had this air of realism of human behavior, inperfections so to speak. About motherhood, love, and being a teenager with a mom you're not sure how to love (which felt really close to home let me say).

I do think the pacing is a bit odd in spots for atmospheric purposes but I will definetly rewatch this sooner than later, maybe I'll feel differently knowing where all the pieces will land.

Also lol I had no idea that Kikuko was the one making the voices at the shrine and for the seagulls, it honestly was a eureka moment once Ninomiya mentioned it and I suddendly understood their oddball connection with one another.

8/10!

This was a weird one. I enjoyed it but at the end I just felt like, "What was the point?"

It was like they took random stuff and threw them all in with no real attempt to gel them together, like the "talking animals" and the boy. I also didn't feel like there was much relationship dynamic between Kikuko and her mom either. It never felt like Kikuko was actually embarrassed about her, other than her eating habits.

The big highlights were the girls' basketball drama (but then that also got thrown away after the 2 made up) and the sports day.

That flashback info dump at the end felt too sudden and out of place, like they felt they needed some twist and had no ideas how to fit it in. At that point there was completely unnecessary to introduce this other mother plot, especially since she never actually appears. They could've spent that time on some real drama instead.

It made no sense why the movie is named after the mom. Going in I thought it would be about her making the best of bad situations, kind of like "Tokyo Godfathers." The intro was good and yeah, she doesn't care about everyone's perceptions and lives how she likes, but the movie is hardly about her and her supposed "good fortunes."

It was a decently fun movie but poorly executed. 7/10

I assume she finally got her period, and those pink buns? were some kind of celebration gift (I don't know anything about Japanese traditions). Earlier in the movie she talked about how all the other girls were getting periods and boobs before her and she wished she never would.

I find it somewhat amusing that the MC had a completely platonic interaction with her best friend with the same gestures that people called "obviously romantic" in one of the recent shows, but ok, I won't be salty and sarcastic in the wrong place fot this. It's a great movie, I loved how it portrayed childhood experiences, although the jokes about Nikuko's weight were sometimes over the top. And yes, that weird facial expression at the end...

Quite a simple and weird movie at the same time, I did expect much more from it tbh but it did deliver in the backgrounds thanks to the legendary art director.

Another avant-garde movie with very pretty art. In Children of the Sea, I didn't like the story, or what passed for its "story", because I felt it tried too hard in the wrong direction. However, the staff got it right here by opting for a more grounded slice of life. It's an enjoyable watch.

And seeing Kikuko and Ninomiya vibe with each other's weirdness... straight to my feels.

Loved the film. I really like Nikuko as a character. Learning how she came to raise this child, just so sad. I don't like Miu and I hoped she would not get a chance to see her kid (but we didn't get her at all).
